25 de Abril Bridge, Lisbon

4.4
#16 of 93 in Sightseeing in Lisbon
Bridge Tourist Spot
Longer than the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and quite similar to it in appearance, 25 de Abril Bridge connects Lisbon to Almada and services around 380,000 people daily. With a length of 2,277 m (7,470 ft), it's one of the longest suspension bridges in Europe. Because of heavy seismic activity in the region, it was built using the deepest foundation in the world, which reaches 80 m (262 ft) down into the riverbed. This massive red bridge can be a majestic addition to your holiday photo archive, or a picturesque backdrop for a picnic. You can cross it by car or by train. • You will be forgiven for being reminded of San Francisco while in Lisbon for many reasons (the steep hills, the cable cars), most of all for this bridge built by the same team responsible for the Gold...  more »

  • This Iconic bridge can be viewed from many parts of Lisbon and is especially photogenic. We first crossed it on a bus from Faro but it is also possible to cross by tram.  more »

  • Incredible piece of engineering based on the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Good bit of history to it surrounding Portugal and its liberation from Fascism in the 1970. Well worth a look.
  • Very beautiful bridge, sharing the design from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Great views from the bridge but it also looks amazing on distance.
  • Very scenic bridge picturesque places on both sides of the bridge. Both rail and road traffic available. Bridge can be seen from much distant places.
  • Beautiful construction engineering, have to see, I felt like I was in Frisco! This monument (it's really a monument!) was builded after the liberation from Salazar dictatorship, anche the Liberation Day is the same in Italy: 25th of April! Amazing.
  • Nice bride. Looks like there Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

Where to stay in Lisbon

Check into one of Lisbon's grand city center hotels to position yourself well to explore the central historical districts on foot. To avoid the potentially high prices of some of the Old Town's central upscale hotels, try staying in a hostel instead. While some hostels have an upper age limit for their guests, they're affordable and oftentimes offer access to attractions on par with or better than bigger hotels. In the upper town, opt for one of the family-run bed and breakfasts, which provide affordable rooms and, as the name would suggest, include a meal as well.
