25 de Abril Bridge, Lisbon

4.4
#30 of 974 in Things to do in Lisbon
Longer than the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and quite similar to it in appearance, 25 de Abril Bridge connects Lisbon to Almada and services around 380,000 people daily. With a length of 2,277 m (7,470 ft), it's one of the longest suspension bridges in Europe. Because of heavy seismic activity in the region, it was built using the deepest foundation in the world, which reaches 80 m (262 ft) down into the riverbed. This massive red bridge can be a majestic addition to your holiday photo archive, or a picturesque backdrop for a picnic. You can cross it by car or by train. • Beautiful bridge (brother of the bridge of San Francisco), visible from just about anywhere, but the best point of view it's on the esplanade of the Christ.

  • Incredible work of engineering. Very scenic bridge picturesque places on both sides of the bridge. Historic monuments on the banks. Both rail and road traffic pass through the bridge. Bridge can be seen from much distant places. Its really an engineering marvel.
  • A beautiful and elegant suspension bridge that defines the landscape and welcomes the visitors. Entering Lisbon by car you will be greeted with wonderful views of the city - the mouth of the river, the estuary, the busy harbor, the traditional ferries, the landmark monuments, the aqueduct, and many other. As a functional bridge it sucks. It's a hell for the folks that live on the south side of the city. If you have to cross it regularly, use the train.
  • Beautiful bridge! And now you can have a full imersive experience in the pilar 7 museum
  • The 25 de Abril Bridge (Ponte 25 de Abril, 25th of April Bridge, is a suspension bridge connecting the city of Lisbon, capital of Portugal, to the municipality of Almada on the left (south) bank of the Tagus river. It was inaugurated on August 6, 1966, and a train platform was added in 1999. Because it is a suspension bridge and has similar coloring, it is often compared to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, US. It was built by the American Bridge Company which constructed the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, but not the Golden Gate. With a total length of 2,277 m, it is the 27th largest suspension bridge in the world. The upper deck carries six car lanes, while the lower deck carries two train tracks electrified at 25 kV AC. Until 1974, the bridge was named Salazar Bridge. The name "25 de Abril" commemorates the Carnation Revolution.
  • One of the most iconic bridges in Portugal. Good sights guaranteed!
