Jewel of the Algarve
The allure of the beaches and the town's historical center draw visitors to Lagos, a coastal destination in the Barlavento region of the Algarve. The town's name literally means "lakes," and it is known historically as the launching point of several naval expeditions during Portugal's Age of Discoveries. Lagos has its fair share of cobbled streets, squares, and churches, but today this crowded vacation town is most popular for its vibrant nightlife and its selection of bars, restaurants, cafes, and shops. When using our Portugal itinerary builder tool, you're building your holiday based on your own interests, visitor reviews, and the informed opinions of our well-traveled writers.

Where to stay in Lagos

The historical city core of Lagos is packed full of colorful buildings and bustling streets, some of which date as far back as the medieval period. Though the hotels in the central district are on the expensive side, you can put yourself right in the middle of the city's best restaurants, bars, and tourist attractions by reserving a room there. The center and outlying residential neighborhoods also boast plenty of more affordable options, including smaller hotels, guesthouses, and family-run inns that offer fewer amenities but put you in good position to get out and about on foot. As Lagos is a relatively small town, you'll be within walking distance of both of its premier stretches of beach from nearly any lodging. Those with a car or transportation can get even further afield to experience other nearby coastal areas.
