Paco dos Duques de Braganca, Guimaraes
(4.4/5 based on 900+ reviews on the web)
A living reminder of Portugal's colorful past, the atmospheric Paco dos Duques de Braganca sits in the historical center of a World Heritage Site town. Built in the 1420s, the castle originally served as the official residence of Afonso of Braganca, the illegitimate son of King John I. The ambitious Afonso became the patriarch of a powerful dynasty, and his descendants eventually served as kings of Portugal and emperors of Brazil. Encircled by park land, his palace represents one of the finest examples of late-medieval architecture favored by Portuguese nobility during the 15th century. Be sure to visit the first-floor museum, housing a collection of tapestries, porcelains, paintings, and furniture from the 17th and 18th centuries. Put Paco dos Duques de Braganca and other Guimaraes attractions into our Guimaraes travel itinerary planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • Visit outside the castle of Guimarães and internally the Paço dos Duques de Bragança. We did everything in about 1 hour and I say it's worth it! The cost is € 5 per person and is very interesting.

  • We got a bonus that we buy at the box office that for €12 (2 persons) you visit the Castle and the term. It's worth a lot, everything very well set, rehabilitated and have a very clear idea of how you lived at that time.

  • Unmissable place, with several securities and well-kept, with unique architecture. Staff very helpful in explaining every detail, since the audio wasn't working!

  • A beautiful place, inside and out. You must visit if you're in the area of Guimarães. First Sunday of the month has free entry. Easy to get to, train from Porto cheap and easy. Rooms set out well and good interpretation in various languages. Good historical furniture and contents. Want to go again.
  • A bit expensive but definitely worth it because the interiors are beautiful
  • Great views with a nice park in front
  • Photogenic
