Paco dos Duques de Braganca, Guimaraes

(4.4/5 based on 950+ reviews on the web)
A living reminder of Portugal's colorful past, the atmospheric Paco dos Duques de Braganca sits in the historical center of a World Heritage Site town. Built in the 1420s, the castle originally served as the official residence of Afonso of Braganca, the illegitimate son of King John I. The ambitious Afonso became the patriarch of a powerful dynasty, and his descendants eventually served as kings of Portugal and emperors of Brazil. Encircled by park land, his palace represents one of the finest examples of late-medieval architecture favored by Portuguese nobility during the 15th century. Be sure to visit the first-floor museum, housing a collection of tapestries, porcelains, paintings, and furniture from the 17th and 18th centuries. Put Paco dos Duques de Braganca and other Guimaraes attractions into our Guimaraes travel itinerary planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • Loved it! The site contains meeting rooms set as at the time, besides various works of art. It is worth visiting with calm. The Chapel, which is at the end of the ride. I went in the late afternoon, which earned me still beautiful photos of the sunset on the outside.

  • the Palace of the Dukes of bragança is indispensible in Guimaraes, one of the most beautiful cities of Portugal. All furnished allows you to have an idea of the life of the nobility in the late middle ages and the forced Royal House of Braganza. Guimarães is the cradle of the Kingdom of Portugal.

  • A must walk through immense building, visiting rooms and rooms set with furniture and tapestries. Notice the wooden lining and the secret passageways between the environments.

  • A beautiful place, inside and out. You must visit if you're in the area of Guimarães. First Sunday of the month has free entry. Easy to get to, train from Porto cheap and easy. Rooms set out well and good interpretation in various languages. Good historical furniture and contents. Want to go again.
  • A bit expensive but definitely worth it because the interiors are beautiful
