Paco dos Duques de Braganca, Guimaraes

4.4
A living reminder of Portugal's colorful past, the atmospheric Paco dos Duques de Braganca sits in the historical center of a World Heritage Site town. Built in the 1420s, the castle originally served as the official residence of Afonso of Braganca, the illegitimate son of King John I. The ambitious Afonso became the patriarch of a powerful dynasty, and his descendants eventually served as kings of Portugal and emperors of Brazil. Encircled by park land, his palace represents one of the finest examples of late-medieval architecture favored by Portuguese nobility during the 15th century. Be sure to visit the first-floor museum, housing a collection of tapestries, porcelains, paintings, and furniture from the 17th and 18th centuries. • A place without leftover doubt beautiful. Worth the visit and the money is spent, we recommend the purchase of ticket together with the Castle. The Palace has beautiful pieces and filling the eye. A historic heritage and wonderful site.

  • Beautiful restoration of a Palace (too much for the taste of some, but the end result does not shock me) exhibition of furniture and objects from different periods. Combined with the fortress ticket.

  • Beautiful rooms, gorgeous tapestries, but I wish there was more info on historical event about the place.
  • Very beautiful. Interesting with a very particular architecture. Nice museum inside with wonderful ceramics and tapestry. Outside is beautiful to. Love Guimaraes. Essential visit.
  • A beautiful place, inside and out. You must visit if you're in the area of Guimarães. First Sunday of the month has free entry. Easy to get to, train from Porto cheap and easy. Rooms set out well and good interpretation in various languages. Good historical furniture and contents. Want to go again.
  • History of Portugal... Long time ago
  • A bit expensive but definitely worth it because the interiors are beautiful

Where to stay in Guimaraes

As one of Portugal's biggest tourist cities and home to a wealth of historical buildings and other sites, Guimaraes boasts a wide array of options for accommodations ranging from extensive boutique hotels to basic youth hostels. To place yourself right in the midst of the action, check into a hotel or guesthouse in the town's medieval center, which reflects a multitude of different architectural styles that have earned it a place on the World Heritage List. Note, however, that with this popularity comes a higher pricetag. To keep costs down, try staying in the residential areas south of the center, which still provide quick access by foot or public transportation to the main sights.
