See architectural styles that can be observed in Portuguese colonies in Africa and Latin America even today. Dating back to 950 CE, the town's earliest features included rugged stone houses and a defense castle. Portugal city must-see. Excellently preserved and with many places to visit. Although restored, essential visit to the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza and the Collegiate Church of our Lady of the olive tree. Strolling through the streets is a delight and they are full of history. Impressive the sacristy of the convent of the Capuchin. Walled enclosure. Notable Castle but are only visible defense canvases and the keep with nothing inside. Important point: Guimaraes "Born Portugal"

If you are in the North of Portugal this is the first village that you must visit. You have to go soon if want to visit the Castle. And for lunch or dinner I advise the Troubadour.

  • Although every story that carries, I found this part of town well disappointing, but that doesn't take away the merit of the beauty and relevance. The strong point is the amount of restaurants.

Where to stay in Guimaraes

As one of Portugal's biggest tourist cities and home to a wealth of historical buildings and other sites, Guimaraes boasts a wide array of options for accommodations ranging from extensive boutique hotels to basic youth hostels. To place yourself right in the midst of the action, check into a hotel or guesthouse in the town's medieval center, which reflects a multitude of different architectural styles that have earned it a place on the World Heritage List. Note, however, that with this popularity comes a higher pricetag. To keep costs down, try staying in the residential areas south of the center, which still provide quick access by foot or public transportation to the main sights.
