Palheiro Gardens , Funchal
(4.1/5 based on 700+ reviews on the web)
Perched atop a hill overlooking the picturesque port city, Palheiro Gardens draws visitors from around the world with its vast collection of camellias, which includes several species that are more than two centuries old. The English-style gardens sit about 500 m (1,600 ft) above sea level and benefit from a microclimate ideal for growing a range of native and exotic plants from Africa, Australia, and China. The focal point of this manicured park is an 18th century manor house that was originally built as a hunting lodge. Open throughout the year, the gardens form part of a large estate boasting its own hotel, golf course, and orchid nursery. • A must for anyone visiting Madeira interested in gardens. well carded for, good labelling and views over Funchal
  • These gardens are maintained by the Blandy Family and have a private hotel, and their private house, in the grounds. Both buildings in lovely old colonial style. The gardens themselves are delightful ...  more »
  • We came here with the public bus 36a u d back with 37, unfortunately it was raining again and was zero due to fog. We have enjoyed the walk very, and also the camellias have partly been ge blooms. The tea House not so elegant, it imagined as I, for it also not expensive.

  • The garden was indeed but by the fires in 2016 and visiting in late October there are hardly any flowers to be seen. The garden layout is OK but the entrance price of 10.50 Euros each is way over the top.
  • Great garden with large plant specimens of rare-looking types. Many camellias also very old verurwaldete copies. Big old Magnolia trees. The selling point of the system is located in particular vegetation. Who is interested in flowering plants planted in rows, will be replaced immediately after the withering, may not really be found. The system is less mountainous/steep as Jardim Botanico and Monte tropical garden. At the beginning, you must run a piece, but rather just. The plant is also significantly quieter / less full than the two aforementioned and acts in total quiet and relaxed.
