#6 of 18 in Parks in Funchal
Perched atop a hill overlooking the picturesque port city, Palheiro Gardens draws visitors from around the world with its vast collection of camellias, which includes several species that are more than two centuries old. The English-style gardens sit about 500 m (1,600 ft) above sea level and benefit from a microclimate ideal for growing a range of native and exotic plants from Africa, Australia, and China. The focal point of this manicured park is an 18th century manor house that was originally built as a hunting lodge. Open throughout the year, the gardens form part of a large estate boasting its own hotel, golf course, and orchid nursery. • Lovely peaceful garden in upper elevation of Madeira. €11 entry. Lots of different non-native plants. Highly recommend...Funchal bus #36A makes the trip
  • Fairly easy to get to on one of the buses from Funchal (20min) or you can combine with a pre/post walk along a levada. The gardens will take you between one-two hours to explore, depending on your speed and interests. Different from other botanical gardens in Funchal, it feels less formal and more spaced out with a good variety of plants and trees.
  • The Palheiro Gardens are part of the Palheiro Estates that belong to the famous Blandy family in Madeira. These gardens are around 13 km east of Funchal, high atop a hill. Arranged somewhere between a pretty, cottage-like English garden and a formal French park, they are well-maintained and contain the largest variety of plants and trees of the gardens on the island. A lot of thought has gone into the landscaping and planting. Great for a casual stroll or a more formal botanical tour. A must for all garden buffs. The tea house offers good snacks at reasonable prices.
  • Beautiful gardens that always have something to offer whatever time of year. The gardens are very well looked after and well worth a visit.
  • We have visit this place after heavy rain, so the Garden was quite a mess. Entrance fee was 11€/person. Lovely place to visit.
