Monte Palace Madeira, Funchal

4.4
#1 of 18 in Parks in Funchal
The beautiful Monte Palace Madeira surrounds a palace built by Alfredo Guilherme Rodrigues when he acquired the property in 1897. The garden aspect was established 100 years later in 1987 and features exotic plants as well as native ones, primarily from the Madeira forest. Travel along pathways past lakes with koi fish. View artworks integrated into the landscape, such as the garden's ceramic tile collection from the 15th century. A museum houses an exhibit of contemporary Zimbabwean sculpture and a collection of minerals and gems from around the world. • Beautiful, lush and well-kept garden. Mixes small wild-looking areas with groomed flowerbeds and “oriental style” and “italian style” garden areas. Most plants and trees are labeled, very good for botanists and plant-lovers. Two exhibitions at the time of my visit: Contemporary African art and Minerals from the owner’s private collection, the latter really amazing and interesting. The palace was closed. Fountains, streams and pools make the walk even more pleasant. Very interesting Orchids collection.
  • Interesting collections. Fascinating history of Portugal told in the tiled plaques as you follow the red walking route. Very steep site. Remember, once you have walked down you need to walk up to get out. Great view of the toboggans from behind the palace.
  • The Tropical garden is very big and have large amounts of different theme locations and 1-2 exhibitions. Ticket includes a vine testing in cafe with good view to the Funchal. There is another mini garden with free entrance near one of the exit. To the garden you can arrive by cable car 11 EUR or by several buses 2-4 EUR.
  • This is a very tranquil place in the centre of Funchal. Built on several levels you can spend most of the day wondering around looking at an extensive collection of trees, shrubs and plants. The gardens are will shaded and give a nice cool retreat from the heat of the midday sun. There is also a very large selection of gems and minerals on display.
  • One of my favourite places to visit on Madeira and one of the best gardens in the world. Plenty of space to walk around and marvel at the incredible variety of plants in the varied theme areas of the gardens and watch out for the wildlife too! You never know what is watching from the bushes.
