  • Go in have a look but do not, I repeat do not purchase fruit here unless you want to pay EUR7.00 for 2 passion fruits. Such a shame it's a tourist trap with money grabbing stall holders. Some great...

  • Bountiful and colorful place to shop, but prices seemed higher than they should be. Vendors seemed more persistent than they should be, at least to Americans. The exotic flowers were so beautiful!

  • I was not impressed with the harassing/ aggressive nature of these fruit sellers. I appreciate that they’re trying to make business but it did make me feel very touristy. We finally gave in to have some fruit from one of the stalls upstairs. Having lived in Asia for 25 years I know how fresh fruit can/should be at a reasonable price. I should have been more picky to check the fruit I was given myself. But I could see it was overly ripe to the point when it was mushy. For €35 euros I certainly feel very ripped off. I could get fresh dragon fruits from Thailand for a fraction of the price.. Warning also for those who get nauseated the smell of fish. Not the best spot as the market with fish has an overpowering smell. The only nice bit was the plant section.
  • I came on a day where it was raining off/on which really cut down on the crowds because this place can be a madhouse when the cruise ships are here. If you want to just wander, enjoy all the colors and various things to see and aren't looking to actually buy anything it's great. It's just one of those cool things to see if you can catch it at a good time but the fruit is seriously over priced and really geared to grab tourists. If there's an empty table somewhere to sit and just watch it all do it because it's certainly a people watching place!
  • Been here on two visits to Funchal and had a really good time here on both occasions, very much enjoyed the shopping. Lots of tasty fresh fruit and vegetables here as well as a wide variety of beautiful fresh flowers. Around the fresh produce stalls are a wide range of tourists shops. Next door is the fish market where you can see the freshly caught scabbard fish. The upstairs has a couple of eateries but if I was to recommend anywhere inside it would be the little drinkery where you can get one of several freshly made ponchos. Very tasty.
  • Lovely market to get fresh fruit, flowers souvenirs. Lots of the traders let you try the fruit before you buy which is great. Also you can see the fish market and see what has been brought in that morning and purchase fresh straight off the boat.
  • Read! The place has an amazing atmosphere and is beautiful. However, the prices are extremely high for the exotic fruits which are sold mostly to tourists. The salespeople are well prepared and offer tastings of different fruit types which will make you want to buy some fruit - but don't! Go and walk around Funchal and buy from smaller sellers on the street or the supermarket. We walked outside the market and stumbled upon some fruit stalls maybe just some 100m from the market a the prices were 3-4 times less than in the Farmer's Market. We got played and bought some stuff which is fine, but we were surprised to see how huge the markup at the market was!
