Categories: Sacred & Religious Sites, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4.1/5 based on 850+ reviews on the web
Built in 1741, Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte is a Jesuit church that offers a peaceful place for reflection as well as expansive views of Funchal and surrounding areas. For a small fee, you are able to climb the tower and enjoy one of the best viewpoints in town. At the top, watch for the famous "carros de cesto," or basket cars, that run down the streets and send visitors downhill at high speeds in wicker baskets. It is also the final resting place of the last Hapsburg emperor, Charles I, who died in 1922, so go inside to see his tomb. A visit to Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Funchal vacation generator to plot your vacation.

  • This is an absolutely beautiful church with so much atmosphere. It is well worth a visit. The steps at the front are pretty steep.
