Blandy's Wine Lodge, Funchal

4.2
Winery / Vineyard · Historic Site
Observe Madeira winemaking practices at Blandy's Wine Lodge, where you can hear the company's stories and learn about its history. Operating since 1840, the winery ages its wines using the traditional canteiro method, involving 650 casks, tunnels, vats, changing temperatures, and varying humidity levels. Reserve one of the guided tours to see their cellars, wooden rooms, and huge barrels, and get a chance to taste some of their products. Among numerous wines at the site, you'll have the chance to purchase a golden vintage dating back to 1920 and a deep, dark-brown Madeira bouquet with spices, toffee, and vanilla from 1958. • Best place we visited in Funchal. We took guided 30 minutes tour (bought at the place at cost of wine tasting at the end). We don't know much about wines and we actually learned something here. At the end of tour we there was wine tasting of 5 year blend and "rainwater" wines. You can buy other too. Learning and tasting aside: the building is great and it has a really nice scent.
  • Fantastic experience, but recommend doing the “vintage” tour. Knowledgeable guides, able to answer every question about Madeira wine making. Set in the original, Blandy’s winery, the whole place is imbued with history and the sweet, oaky smell that pervades every room is just devine.
  • Interesting tour, there could be more detail about the tasting, more time is being spent hearing about how we can buy bottles at the airport
  • Nice tour. Good guide with more than enough explanation. some extra tastings would be nice.
  • They have a very good tour with excellent guides who speak English very well. Their prices are affordable and the wine tastes great.
