Blandy's Wine Lodge, Funchal

4.2
#1 of 95 in Wineries in Portugal
Observe Madeira winemaking practices at Blandy's Wine Lodge, where you can hear the company's stories and learn about its history. Operating since 1840, the winery ages its wines using the traditional canteiro method, involving 650 casks, tunnels, vats, changing temperatures, and varying humidity levels. Reserve one of the guided tours to see their cellars, wooden rooms, and huge barrels, and get a chance to taste some of their products. Among numerous wines at the site, you'll have the chance to purchase a golden vintage dating back to 1920 and a deep, dark-brown Madeira bouquet with spices, toffee, and vanilla from 1958. • We arrived at 11am and the next tour wasn't until 1430 so we had a nice look around the various cellar/tasting rooms & then went in to the main tasting room where they have a specific tasting menu on ...  more »

  • Fun tour that included a tasting of 2 Madeira wines. Barrel-making, wine maturation/storage, and a cool little museum included in the tour. The building was pretty and it was conveniently located in the middle of town. Definitely touristy, but enjoyed it anyway.
  • If it's raining that's the place to go. You'll learn a lot about the Madeira wine, have fun and taste the wine. I'd recommend popping by earlier to buy the tickets for the guided tour as these can be gone if you want to buy them like 10 minutes before the tour.
  • Historic touristic old wine house. Blandy's is one of the famous madeira wine exporters. Some wine dating back to the 1800s. If you like madeira wine this winery is the one to go to. The wine could be costly, since it is not your typical European wine. The guided tour is amazing, the sommelier expertise is super, full of history and old tools. Much much recommended If you never tasted madeira wine, it has strong similarities to Port wine, if you haven't tasted porto wine, I suggest that you book a ticket and visit Portugal to do some tourism and taste madeira wine Rating criteria: Cleanliness 5* Taste of wine 5* Wine Variety 5* Service 5* Smoking 5* Price 5* Friendly employees 5* Atmosphere 5* Music NR Cocktails NR Special needs 5* Kids NR
  • Very informative tour around the loft where the aging takes place, lots of information about where and how the grapes are grown then turned into wine. Tastings of 2 nice wines as well, with suggested pairings Also 10% discount on bottles bought there and lunch onsite.
  • Considering the price of the tour and that includes tasting, it was decent. Removing a star for the slightly shallowness of information given, and the constant incitement of buying their products and promoting excessive alcohol consumption (guide jokingly said a bottle a day is what's needed).
