Basilica de Nossa Senhora do Rosario de Fatima
Spiritual travelers and history fans come to Basilica de Nossa Senhora do Rosario de Fatima, where it is believed the first of six apparitions of the Virgin Mary in Portugal occurred. This church, along with a grouping of Roman Catholic structures at the same site, serve as a national monument and sanctuary for religious pilgrimages. The basilica honors the recorded sightings in 1916 of an angel believed to be the Virgin Mary. Join the many others who come to this site because of its spiritual presence, historical curiosities, and architectural intrigue. You can go inside the church to see the carillon of 62 bells and stained-glass windows depicting the events of the Marian apparitions at Fátima. Make Basilica de Nossa Senhora do Rosario de Fatima a centerpiece of your Fatima vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Fatima road trip planning tool.

Great place to reflect. A lot of devotees from all over the world. Our group comprises of people from North and South America, Asia, and neighboring Europe countries. Church has a sacred feel despite of the hundreds of people inside the basilica. The tombs of Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco are readily accessible. I was not even aware that the tombs are inside the church. At first, I was just curious because people are crowding these two places near the altar. To my surprise, the tombs are there. Picture taking is allowed. The facade is grand and spacious. Will come back. Must visit to see the three kids who witnessed three apparitions of the Angel of Peace in 1916 and several apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

It couldn't be very appropriate to narrate herewith personal emotions and goals of visit but to share some practical notes rather: - if you travel there by car be aware of parking problems at weekends and during national holidays; it's hard, indeed, and especially close to the very square where there are some active beggars try to assist you with parking and by that provoking conflicts with other visitors (the police was out of place that time); - do not worry about infrastructure and sanitary rooms - everything is properly organized and functions; - there are a lot of different eateries close to this solemn place - for every taste and budget; - very interesting solution with chandeliers for personal and collective candles; prices for them are very affordable; - the information service, unfortunately, is weak, very weak; if you'd like to know some particular details, better read in advance by your own. Have a pleasant and safe journey!

The main church at the center of Fatima. The church itself is open to tourism and for faith-goers, but you'd be surprised what you can run into when visiting. I happened to come during a wedding ceremony. The priest was going through a homily before a member of the service began singing in celebration of the marriage. The artwork in the church are already impressive and grand, but witnessing the ceremony gave this visit a true cultural insight into Portugal.

Peaceful, religious atmosphere. It is very impressive to see people's faith
-
Gives you an evil vibe with the eery looking paintings. Well maintained though and plenty to see.
