Old Town Faro, Faro

4.3
#1 of 30 in Historic Sites in Faro District
Historic Walking Area Historic Site
Walk the cobbled streets of Old Town Faro and encounter centuries-old architectural sights, Roman passages, cozy cafes, and a museum with archaeological findings. The site features the oldest horseshoe arch in Portugal and a 16th-century convent. Note the many houses decorated by flowers as well as the meandering paths and alleys; take a stroll down the shopping lane at the town center. You can have a meal at one of the typical Algarvian restaurants, or just grab a coffee along the riverfront. Put Old Town Faro and other Faro attractions into our Faro vacation builder, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • The most beautiful place in Faro. Big contrast with the rest of the city which is in big decay. I hope that one day the rest of Faro will be more appealing to see as well.
  • Faro Old Town is a delight, a must see. A walled city within a city. Full to the brim with history. Museums, churches many ancient buildings cobbled streets a joy. Many restaurants to take refreshment in. Honestly don't miss this local gem.
  • I enjoyed the beauty and history of the area. Communities should be proud to protect their heritage, culture and history.
  • I enjoy strolling around the narrow streets, appreciating the old houses and the remaining parts of the town wall.

Where to stay in Faro

As the region's biggest city and one of the country's national hot spots for nightlife, vacations, and the great outdoors, Faro features a huge array of hotels, guesthouses, and hostels. Most of the larger international chains sit within the blocks surrounding the city harbor, and although staying in one can be pricey, it puts you within easy walking distance of the city's selection of bars, restaurants, clubs, and other establishments. For more budget-friendly accommodations check out a family-run inn, a bed and breakfast, or the opportunity to simply rent an extra room from a local--all of which are extremely common in Faro. These accommodations may be a little farther outside the city center, but you'll get a quiet nook in a nearby residential neighborhood away from the city bustle.
