Vulcão dos Capelinhos, Faial Island

The Capelinhos is a monogenetic volcano located on the western coast of the island of Faial in the Azores. It is part of the larger Volcanic Complex of Capelo, that includes 20 scoria cones and lava fields that are aligned west-northwest to east-southeast from the Cabeço Gordo caldera. Although the name "Capelinhos" is associated with the volcano, it technically refers to the western cape of the parish of Capelo. It can be considered the westernmost point of Europe, if the Monchique Islet, near Flores Island, also in the Azores, is considered part of insular North America, for it seats on the North American Plate.A volcanic eruption lasted for 13 months, from September 27, 1957 until October 24, 1958, which may have been two overlapping volcanic eruptions. While enlarging the land by 2.4 km², it spawned 300 seismic events, hurled ash 1 km, destroyed 300 houses in the parishes of Capelo and Praia do Norte and caused the evacuation of 2,000 people . On October 25, the volcano entered a period of dormancy. It is a part of an active fissural volcanic complex which creates multiple seismic and volcanic events.

  • A great opportunity to see what a active volcano does to the landscape. You seldom have the opportunity to walk on land that did not exist 60 years ago and the ocean off in the distance really brings ...  more »
  • The place is really impressive with its colour contrasts between the blue sea and sky, the Earth and the Black Mountain green with the lighthouse as a watchman on this landscape.

  • We were last Monday there and can only recommend a visit, if you want to see everything alone, 90 minutes should be scheduled. the visitor centre with a 2 minute 3D film and the connected Museum is very interesting!

  • Definitely one of the most stunning places I have seen in Faial and also on whole Azores. So different, so beautiful and so scary at the same time. It can be windy, so you have to be careful that you don't get lava sand in your eyes or mouth.
  • What an amazing place !!! The landscape is incredible, really worth to walk all the way to the sea
  • worth climbing up, there's a fumarole
  • Is a historical site. Give us the opportunity to view a short film about the beginnings of Earth, as if formed the islands of the Azores. It also has samples of rare stones. Beautiful!

  • It's been fascinating to see what force can develop nature: within a few day, an entire village disappears by a volcanic eruption, creates new country within a few months, and within a few years, this new country is again swallowed by the sea . Maybe a person learns at some point even that he cannot live without nature, the nature but without him. We can not draw them.
