4.2
#2 of 98 in Historic Sites in Alentejo
Religious Site Tourist Spot
See the remains of the ancient Roman Templo Romano de Evora (Templo de Diana), with a preserved base and columns carved out of granite and marble, positioned at the center of a public square. This two-millennia-old religious structure stands 9.7 m (32 ft) tall and 25 m (82 ft) wide, and was originally surrounded by a reflecting pool. Built mainly for religious purposes, the site was historically used also as an execution point and a slaughterhouse. View its 14 original granite Corinthian columns with decorative marble capitals, sturdy enough to have withstood the destructive earthquake of 1755. Where to stay in Evora

Take advantage of Evora's array of ancient and historical sites by staying in one of the many mid-range hotels located within its medieval core. Thanks to a mix of Roman, Moorish, and later European buildings, the entire center is listed as a World Heritage Site, so this area provides a great base for sightseeing by foot. To save a little on accommodations, you can also check into one of the hostels in town, most of which are located in the city center or on its winding residential streets that branch off from the main squares. These usually have shared, dorm-style rooms, but can get you right in the midst of the action at a very low cost.

  • This temple is a top sight of Evora and a great place to visit around sunset with its adjacent garden. It was so well-preserved because it was encased in Medieval construction and used for years as a ...  more »
  • It's worth seeing, though compared to Evora other attractions it's about middling. But it's location next to the Pousada and Ducal palace means there is much more to see.  more »
  • Like many ancient monuments, this one owes its survival to a series of fortuitous events (the columns were walled in) and how fortunate that was: the Corinthian columns are exquisite and their locatio...  more »

  • a wonderful place to wander and see the structure of this fantastic Roman temple ,nice coffees shops nearby to relax..Watch the time of the buses returning to Lisbon when not hiring a car cause you might stuck in the bus station..
  • Nice Roman relics. I've been to Rome recently so I'm not that impressed. The garden in front is nice.
  • The Roman temple ruins was a great place to visit in Evora. In the park next to it there is a Nice little kiosk you can sit at and enjoy the temple view.
  • Unexpected find, with a catholic church on one side, Inquisitor center on another. Very historical site if you know what to look for. The Inquisitor's house is not highlighted very often. When I was there was closed (Monday)
  • A great stop and a short ride from Lisboa. I wan't aware of this first-century historic landmark prior to my visit. The Roman Temple of Évora (Templo romano de Évora), also referred to as the Templo de Diana (albeit wrongly).
