#3 of 16 in Historic Sites in Evora
Religious Site Historic Site
One of the oldest buildings in the city, the Gothic Se Catedral de Evora forms part of a complex of historical buildings that are on the World Heritage List. This building, the largest medieval cathedral in the country, features two eye-catching towers, each with a different conical spire. The building's cloisters, completed in the 14th century, include marble statues of the four evangelists and a polychrome statue of the Virgin Mary. Take the cloisters' spiral staircase to reach the upper story, which offers unobstructed views of the cathedral complex and the surrounding landscape. After you see the view from the top, descend to the cathedral museum, noted for displaying a 17th century reliquary encrusted with 840 diamonds and 402 rubies. • OK, we have seen lots of churches over the past 10 days, but the Sé in Evora is not really special, compared to what we saw in Braga, Porto, Coimbra and Lisbon. But the convent/claustro is nice, and y...  more »

  • Very nice place. Well worth the 3,5€ ti access the whole building including the roof, cloister and garden. Also the first church I've visited where you could relax with a whisky after the walk.
  • If you have to visit one place in Evora, this should be it. From the great view from the top of the roof to the garden throu the Gothic arches. Magnificent!
  • Stunning church established in the mid 1500s. Very medieval! It was 3,50€ to walk about the tower, cloister and actual church portion. The steps to the beautiful vista overlooking miles around Portugal are tight! But the view is 100% worthwhile. The cloister is also lovely and there's a WC as well as a tiny faucet if you want to refill your water. The vending machine doesn't work. It was absolutely quiet and barely anyone was there when we went-- so perfect for pictures and being in your feels. Highly recommend
  • As if this small town didn't have enough, this cathedral is hiding near the Roman ruins, tickets are cheap at 3.5 euros, but one star has to be taken off due to the fact that one has to pay just to pray in the cathedral, just charging for the rooftop and cloister would be enough, it just feels a bit wrong.
  • When I went inside I didn't expect to be so amazed by it. The top of the tower shows both the city and the countryside of Alentejo. Being in the cloister feels like going back in time.

Where to stay in Evora

Take advantage of Evora's array of ancient and historical sites by staying in one of the many mid-range hotels located within its medieval core. Thanks to a mix of Roman, Moorish, and later European buildings, the entire center is listed as a World Heritage Site, so this area provides a great base for sightseeing by foot. To save a little on accommodations, you can also check into one of the hostels in town, most of which are located in the city center or on its winding residential streets that branch off from the main squares. These usually have shared, dorm-style rooms, but can get you right in the midst of the action at a very low cost.
