Praca do Giraldo, Evora

(4.2/5 based on 850+ reviews on the web)
Largely responsible for Evora's designation as a World Heritage Site, the medieval Praca do Giraldo remains the city's social center. Once the setting for some of the region's most violent historical events, the spacious square witnessed thousands of gruesome executions during the Spanish Inquisition. Today, this lively public space attracts tourists with its alfresco cafes and restaurants, which serve regional specialties in a relaxed, urban atmosphere. Surrounding the elegant plaza you can see some of the country's finest examples of Gothic and Romanesque architecture, including a cathedral where explorer Vasco de Gama had the flags of his ships blessed before setting off on his famous trip to India. • Praça do Giraldo is a mandatory passage and worth for stay there a little sitting on a terrace drinking a coffee or a beer. It is a pity that some buildings around the square are slightly degraded or the need of a painting/restoration of the facade. The Church is one of those examples. Something should be done to prevent this sort of thing in an area so central and touristy as this.

  • We walked around the square but as city squares go in Europe this one is average. However we really enjoyed walking on all the streets that run off the square. Also the church at one end of the square...  more »
  • Very pleasant square with some activities on the day of my visit, no parking in the square but a few tens of meters you can park, terraces and some people on the street.

  • The main square where people meet up and enjoy their moments. Sometimes, there are concert and events. Don't forget to drop by! 😊
  • Centre of Evora City. It's a very big square where people meet by the end of the day to talk and have a walk! Very safe!!
  • Great central location to launch into other parts of Évora. Also plenty of cafes to enjoy sunset on the square.
  • We enjoyed a surprise concert by Kabakan one evening here. The square is a wonderful place to relax and soak up the ambiance of Evora.
  • A lively main square where you can have a coffee and eat chestnuts while viewing people come and go .
