  • In the central square of the city of Elvas, up the street side of the Cathedral, we arrive at largo do Pelourinho, or where this is located. Housed in a set of well-preserved architecture and traces of old.

  • Very pretty town with beautiful historical features.
  • Curious and fancy design
  • Elvas received first Charter of Sancho II, in 1229, and Charter New d. Manuel, in 1512, during the year preceding your elevation to city. Although certainly raised a pillory following the foral Manueline, nothing is known at present of this monument. Pelourinho de Elvas is actually the same as stood in the former municipality of Ouguela (today integrated in Campo Maior), which received a Charter in 1512 Again. The extinction of the municipality, in the 19th century, may have justified the removal of the picota, whose location is still evoked in the toponym of the Largo do Pelourinho, inside the Castle. The 16th column was dismantled in 1872, and its components taken to Elvas, where they were deposited in the Municipal Museum. Remounted in c. 1942, this time at the current location (in front of the Cathedral), received some new parts, partly identifiable through careful observation of the monument. Is the case of the marble pedestal, and of the steps to the fore-end, since the originals will have stayed in Ouguela. Also the capital and the shot are clearly modern parts, while the fastening irons, intact, are supposedly sixteenth century (Louis KEIL, 1943). On an octagonal platform, cut out to overcome the unevenness of the terrain, stands a four punch also octagonal steps, sharp edge, serving as support to the column. The forend is based on prismatic base, decorated with a horizontal molduração, and finished off by Scotland decorated with balls, and nosing. The forend, cylindrical, is composed of two sections of identical height, sinistorsum, coiled with spirals decorated by rows of balls, joined by central ring torso. The capital is composed of smooth, cylindrical cushion with balls, and square ornate abacus protruding from a herringbone motif, and crowned by torsade frame. The anchors of subjection, in the cross, serpes format and saving the rings were inserted between the capital and the pyramidal, with edges decorated by balls. SML

  • The pelourinho, a sign of authority and exhibition comes to Elvas in the 21st century. XVI, being erected on so called New Square (Praça da República), at the entrance of Rua dos Sapateiros Street where you were fulfilling your function until October 1872, 2 day it was pedestrian and destroyed. When was the Municipal Museum part of what remained of the pillory was then stored. In 1940 are a project by Vitalino of Albuquerque for the reconstruction of the pillory made from an engraving published in the newspaper Panorama. Taking advantage of the unique pieces stored and replacing the missing was rebuilt and placed in Largo do Dr. Santa Clara.
