  • Ancient see of Elvas, is currently Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção. Is one of the most emblematic monuments of this city of Alentejo, with a very diverse historical past. It was classified as National Monument by Decree of 16 June 1910. It is thought to have been erected in 1517. In 1515 the King d. Manuel, checking the State of disrepair in which the temple was located, have ordered your reconstruction. The new church would open the cult in 1537, still works in progress. By this date the chapel would be completed, thereby allowing the liturgical offices held. Through consultation of the visitations conducted to this church, Arthur George mentions that in 1541 the visitor that was impounded at the lajeamento of the building, once the dust and mud kept the faithful. This work lasted until 1548, when also concluded the sacristy.
