Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Se Velha de Coimbra)
Considered one of the most important Romanesque Roman Catholic structures in the country, Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Se Velha de Coimbra) is also one of Portugal's best-preserved cathedrals. While other structures had to be greatly remodeled or renovated over time, especially after the Great Earthquake of 1755, this church has remained relatively intact. The original medieval structure was very basic and built in the 13th century. The Romanesque style for which it is now famous was designed later by architect Master Robert. Peruse the facades of this cathedral, including the Renaissance-style portal that was added in the 16th century, before exploring its interior. Take in hundreds of years of history while walking through this architectural and artistic site. The cathedral reminded me of the churches of southern France. There, too, you won`t understand: the church in front of you or still a fortress. By the way, maybe that's why the cathedral was quickly..... more »

A very nice romanesque cathedral. It really deserves a visit and it is a key part of the city. It also has a very nice Renassaince door in the lateral façade. Only downside is that it is too much... more »

We did the tour with children (4 and 6yo) and the tour is short and beautiful. it's worth it to know the story. In our view, it was more beautiful than the new cathedral. Attention: stairs on the... more »

This place is worth a visit. Best done walking from the university.

Magical place. Full of old stuff. There is some bishops buried there, funny if you think how many people may died there. There is also an old tree in the backyard. Bottomline: if you like old stuff, that is your place.

Very old and charming place! Just the streets are very tight to go by car.

It's a grand old church steeped in history. Design wise (and I'm really ignorant on architecture), it's a bit stark in some areas unlike some of the other churches in the area. I arrived early on Tuesday and waited for opening time (10:00) but didn't seem to see anyone so left to come back later. This church is very central and it's really easy to find. Just walk about Coimbra and chances are that you will end up stumbling across it from some corner. The entrance will give you access to the church as well as the courtyard with a view of the walls of the university higher up. It was however a little strange to see some washing(?) of one of the houses that you can see from the courtyard.
