Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Se Velha de Coimbra), Coimbra

(4.4/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web)
Considered one of the most important Romanesque Roman Catholic structures in the country, Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Se Velha de Coimbra) is also one of Portugal's best-preserved cathedrals. While other structures had to be greatly remodeled or renovated over time, especially after the Great Earthquake of 1755, this church has remained relatively intact. The original medieval structure was very basic and built in the 13th century. The Romanesque style for which it is now famous was designed later by architect Master Robert. Peruse the facades of this cathedral, including the Renaissance-style portal that was added in the 16th century, before exploring its interior. Take in hundreds of years of history while walking through this architectural and artistic site. • The old cathedral is one of the oldest medieval churches of Europe. Besides being super well kept on the outside, the cloisters are also beautiful. If I'm not mistaken costs less than 5 euros to access the cloisters of the Cathedral, and is very worthwhile. Once inside the Church, note the ground. There are several graves scattered around the floor of the Church, but the inscriptions are fading, so have to watch. Also notice the aspersoria of holy water at the entrance of the Church. They are shells, brought by the Portuguese of the oceans funds during the great navigations. PS: it's not a good place to go at night, because there are many bars around the Church and young people tend to meet on the steps of the Church for drink, vomit, etc. But if you like that vibe, you can go to the Fit (a bar right in front of the Cathedral), ask for a thin and drinking on the steps, too. It's a fun experience:)
