Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Se Velha de Coimbra), Coimbra
(4.4/5 based on 600+ reviews on the web)
Considered one of the most important Romanesque Roman Catholic structures in the country, Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Se Velha de Coimbra) is also one of Portugal's best-preserved cathedrals. While other structures had to be greatly remodeled or renovated over time, especially after the Great Earthquake of 1755, this church has remained relatively intact. The original medieval structure was very basic and built in the 13th century. The Romanesque style for which it is now famous was designed later by architect Master Robert. Peruse the facades of this cathedral, including the Renaissance-style portal that was added in the 16th century, before exploring its interior. Take in hundreds of years of history while walking through this architectural and artistic site. • The altar is very beautiful. Gothic architecture. But it's not those churches that fill the eye, looks a little empty. But surely a great historical importance.

  • Worth knowing! There is a mini tour € 2.50 (12/2016) that gives access to the Cathedral and cloister. Linda! Amazing, beautiful paintings altar.

  • The Cathedral blends various styles of construction and explains the difference, which is cool (it must be amazing to show for kids!). The shells from the Indian Ocean are stunning! I enjoyed the visit to the cloister. Generally I'm against paying to go into churches, but the 2.50 euros worth.
