Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Se Velha de Coimbra), Coimbra

(4.4/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web)
Considered one of the most important Romanesque Roman Catholic structures in the country, Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Se Velha de Coimbra) is also one of Portugal's best-preserved cathedrals. While other structures had to be greatly remodeled or renovated over time, especially after the Great Earthquake of 1755, this church has remained relatively intact. The original medieval structure was very basic and built in the 13th century. The Romanesque style for which it is now famous was designed later by architect Master Robert. Peruse the facades of this cathedral, including the Renaissance-style portal that was added in the 16th century, before exploring its interior. Take in hundreds of years of history while walking through this architectural and artistic site. • The old cathedral was designed by the French Master Roberto in the 12th century. The central portal has clear influence Islamic decoration, while the side door, reveals an elegant Renaissance decor. You can visit the Interior of the Church and the Gothic cloister started in 1218. Price: 2 € Church and Cloister Timetables: daily: 10 am-6 pm each face of the cloister of the old cathedral has five arches broken, involving each of a pair of twin arches back perfect, ripping on each flag a small rose window decorated with very simple tracery. Romanesque-Gothic cloister of the old cathedral, built during the reign of Alfonso II is located in the transition to the Gothic, lying on the South side of the temple.
