Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Se Velha de Coimbra), Coimbra

(4.4/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web)
Considered one of the most important Romanesque Roman Catholic structures in the country, Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Se Velha de Coimbra) is also one of Portugal's best-preserved cathedrals. While other structures had to be greatly remodeled or renovated over time, especially after the Great Earthquake of 1755, this church has remained relatively intact. The original medieval structure was very basic and built in the 13th century. The Romanesque style for which it is now famous was designed later by architect Master Robert. Peruse the facades of this cathedral, including the Renaissance-style portal that was added in the 16th century, before exploring its interior. Take in hundreds of years of history while walking through this architectural and artistic site. • The most beautiful monument of Romanesque in Portugal. It is important for your architecture, ships and side doors, standing out the door, 16th century style Specious.. Inside you can see various altarpieces, polychrome wood ones and a magnificent altar-piece in Ançã stone, location of the region of Coimbra. It is also linked to the old cathedral a beautiful University student tradition. The party of the burning of the ribbons, which take place in may, on the steps of the old cathedral commencing the festivities with a traditional "Monumental Serenade"
