Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Se Velha de Coimbra), Coimbra

4.4
#2 of 17 in Historic Sites in Coimbra
Considered one of the most important Romanesque Roman Catholic structures in the country, Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Se Velha de Coimbra) is also one of Portugal's best-preserved cathedrals. While other structures had to be greatly remodeled or renovated over time, especially after the Great Earthquake of 1755, this church has remained relatively intact. The original medieval structure was very basic and built in the 13th century. The Romanesque style for which it is now famous was designed later by architect Master Robert. Peruse the facades of this cathedral, including the Renaissance-style portal that was added in the 16th century, before exploring its interior. Take in hundreds of years of history while walking through this architectural and artistic site. • After rising streets and endless staircases went off the Cathedral. I saw the staircase of SERENADES the facade and little more. €2 input and 50 cent. Had not taken money. Patience. I took some pictures. I saw the House where the Zeca had lived.

  • Talk of the old cathedral to remember is the academic life and the Monumental Serenades made at the time of the burning of the Ribbons. The Romanesque church begun to build at the beginning of the 20th century. XII is a beautiful representative of this architectural style which is very worthwhile visiting.

  • To enter you have to pay €2.5 and worth every penny. I'm Catholic and not even close in sacred art, but this church is really a show of art inside, about to touch your heart. You also go to the upper floor, where there is an initial construction of a monastery. In this place I would be reading a book for hours, as well as beautiful, you transmit a lot of peace. Super recommend!

  • The cathedral is great Coimbra is delightful I recommend it to anyone visiting Portugal.
  • Beautiful cathedral and worth the visit. One of Coimbra’s most awesome touristic points!
  • Very beautiful and worth paying a visit despite an entrance fee.
  • Looks cool from the outside. Really impressive architecture. Not much else to do there but to look at it.
  • Wonderful romanic style church with stupid, idiot sacristian which don't allow entrace even at 17.50 while mass bagin at 18. This idiot treat church like his own property. I see no reason to close entrance with line and don't allow go in, while 10 minutes is enough to see that building. We people who believe in God sponsored that building not sacristian and not priest! Also we pay yours rent! Yours behaviour is scandalic! I dont want visit church DURING mass but 10 minutes before, probably you brain less cant imagine that! After moving 3000 km it is not so easy adjust with time to seconds! You have almost empty churches now and such unfriendly behaviour like that stupid sacristian make them more empty faster! By the way same arogantic you may meet in Vatican.
