Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Se Velha de Coimbra), Coimbra

4.4
#2 of 15 in Historic Sites in Coimbra
Considered one of the most important Romanesque Roman Catholic structures in the country, Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Se Velha de Coimbra) is also one of Portugal's best-preserved cathedrals. While other structures had to be greatly remodeled or renovated over time, especially after the Great Earthquake of 1755, this church has remained relatively intact. The original medieval structure was very basic and built in the 13th century. The Romanesque style for which it is now famous was designed later by architect Master Robert. Peruse the facades of this cathedral, including the Renaissance-style portal that was added in the 16th century, before exploring its interior. Take in hundreds of years of history while walking through this architectural and artistic site. Belongs to the type of building fortified Catholic. Mixture of styles and usual baroque altars and chapels blaze. Legs shoulder along the cobbled climbs of small stones as the mule tracks.

We are fans of this matter, a little so the cathedrals, can be said to be sport. This is in particular a so eclectic, although predominantly Romanesque and has a beautiful cloister. Entries without a €2.5 and infants do not pay.

It is a place full of history, a Romanesque architecture with gothic altars. In the beautiful colonnades. The price is a bit pulled to a church. But I really liked it

  • Amazing place but inside they don't let us get some shot and photos
  • Beautiful homage to the Holy Mother. Go and pray for peace.
  • Nice open area next to cathedral (entrance inside).
  • Historical church. Quite place to relax after all day long city tour.
  • Really cool XXII century church. Definitely worth a visit.

Where to stay in Coimbra

Indulge in the medieval splendor of Coimbra by booking a hotel in the city's historical hilltop and hillside central area, which is home to the majority of its hotels and guesthouses. By staying right in the middle of the Old Town, you'll have medieval monasteries, Renaissance homes, and Baroque halls right at your doorstep. You'll also be within walking distance of the city's famed university complex. Alternatively, try staying in one of the center's youth hostels, which offer shared rooms, lockers, breakfast, and a comfortable bed at a fraction of the cost of an upscale hotel. These accommodations also give you a good base from which you can experience the city's student-fueled nightlife. To get away from the mainstream tourist center a bit, opt for a hotel or bed and breakfast in the quieter residential neighborhoods east of the university.
