Biblioteca Joanina - Universidade de Coimbra, Coimbra

(4.6/5 based on 2,400+ reviews on the web)
Browse a collection of 250,000 volumes, some dating back to 1750, at Biblioteca Joanina - Universidade de Coimbra, a rich European library. The older works are difficult to preserve because of their fragile papers, but the site uses both modern technology and ancient techniques to maintain them--including hosting a colony of live bats, which eat bibliophagic insects and woodworms. Walk through three rooms of the library, adorned with decorative arches, painted ceiling murals, and gilded shelves carved out of tropical wood. Take a guided tour and learn about the history of the institution. • The Biblioteca Joanina that should your name to Magnanimous King d. João V is very well preserved and worth a little visit to 30 minutes

  • Look at the surprise. What is this?! Here's what! Che meraviglioso!! Not only burn in my eyes because I strongly wanted to take a picture in one piece is prohibited. Gold paint decoration reflects Portugal golden age? Reputation and admire. Benefits that had to go because it was winter travel. Visitors to Coimbra to visit!

  • Beautiful baroque library with three hundred thousand volumes in Brazil wood shelving (it was the era of the discoveries of the Americas), bats that are not seen by day, eat insects that live among the books, preserving them. The Golden carvings, large tables, decorations make it a must in the University context.

  • Impressive, but no photos allowed and lack of English information about the exhibit requiring to pay the extra cost for a guided or audio tour.
  • It's beautiful but very expensive given only 15 mins is allowed and no photos taking allowed even without flash at such a high entrance fee.
  • A very old and beautiful library.
  • Absolute feeling of paper surrounding the visitor overwhelming all senses within middle age smelling a kind of "Latin letter alphabet presence", clergy endeavours in ancients Greek idioms from Thessaloniki Macedonian Spartan Rhodesian and Athenians dialects created!!! Whole bunch of nonsensical dithyrambs invented as time goes by, flawless bullshit by the way, who's not easy to achieve!!! Seriously, very impressive collection of ancient writings, clerical and historical as oldest Iberian literature in Portuguese old Latin, Spanish Italian even French and Ancient Greek. Well arranged properly disposed and quite good explained, a miracle in these countries, where organisation is a vocable that seems to be absent of dictionaries and mostly important from use. Nice to visiting and enjoy it as it is.... Bibliothecae or libraries...... P.S. Very interesting manuscripts
  • Fantastic old library! This is a place you must visit if you're visiting Coimbra.
