Santuario do Bom Jesus do Monte, Braga
(4.8/5 based on 850+ reviews on the web)
Perched upon a hilltop in Portugal's Braga district, Santuario do Bom Jesus do Monte represents one of the area's most important historical pilgrimage sites. Climb the ornate, Baroque double staircase that zigzags up the hill for 116 m (381 ft), to the church's main courtyard. From the top of the basilica, you'll find a view of the city, hills, and coastal landscape. Instead of climbing, you can hop in the historical funicular car, notable for its continuing usage of a water balance system for power, and ride up to the peak. Step inside the church, which was constructed during the 18th century, to explore its different chapels, ornate decorations, statues, and religious artwork depicting Biblical scenes. • It is difficult to decide what is the place of pilgrimage or most impressive Catholic worship in Portugal, which has such emblematic sites such as Fatima. For me the JESUS ´BOM of Braga is the most spectacular from the artistic point of view (of the religious beyond everyone). A superb double staircase climb from the city to the mount. At each landing there is a chapel which by itself would be a must-see in other parts. You get to an Esplanade where the shrine stands (itself not worth much) in a beautiful forest with a pond with fish of colors where can paddle, hotels, restaurants etc. If that was not enough, also you can climb or along the winding road, or the funicular more ancient in the world. As I say, the Church I would not say that artistically notable for anything, but the set is spectacular, and the biggest tourist attraction of Braga, a city already on point is the most interesting thing about Portugal.

  • Simply marvelous! Conveys extreme peace ... must go can use the funicula for access. So can you if you arrive by car

  • Consider the shrine of bom jesus Braga's main tourist spot. Located in Uptown, go by car is the best option. Not to be missed.
