Santuario do Bom Jesus do Monte, Braga

(4.7/5 based on 950+ reviews on the web)
Perched upon a hilltop in Portugal's Braga district, Santuario do Bom Jesus do Monte represents one of the area's most important historical pilgrimage sites. Climb the ornate, Baroque double staircase that zigzags up the hill for 116 m (381 ft), to the church's main courtyard. From the top of the basilica, you'll find a view of the city, hills, and coastal landscape. Instead of climbing, you can hop in the historical funicular car, notable for its continuing usage of a water balance system for power, and ride up to the peak. Step inside the church, which was constructed during the 18th century, to explore its different chapels, ornate decorations, statues, and religious artwork depicting Biblical scenes. • We were in the car and we had some difficulty of how to get to the top but it was worth it. In addition to the beautiful view the set of staircase and artwork are impressive. Impossible not to notice the similarities with Congonhas do Campo, Minas Gerais.

  • Such an enchanted location. Very romantic for couples and adventurous for families. Bring comfortable shoes because you will be walking and seeing so much, come completely comfortable. The entrance is a large park that greats you with a pond that you can take a boat ride in a little romantic touch, then onto the actual site, with everything looking like a storybook your eyes will be in awe of all the natural beauty and rustic charm. There is a place for coffee, snacks and dinner, however you can get even more creative by making a picnic experience. If you want the best experience without too many tourists and chance for incredible photos, arrive early in the morning, during the week and months which are considered cold, November, December, January.
  • The view is breathtaking. The basilica is baroque style and it's beautiful, unique altar. There's a beautiful via Crucis worth visiting too.
  • One of my fav part of this city! get lost and find yourself with architecture and nature! stairs and stairs!! dont miss this place
  • Bom Jesus is amazing - an oasis in Braga. It's perfect for hikes, walks, picnics with families and great place to take beautiful shoeselfies. Josefinas sneakers stand out from the landscape.
  • Beautiful mountain top religious site. If you walk to the top it's 520 steps, there is also a water elevator ride available or car parking along the way. 0.50€ fee to use the restrooms 🙂
