Elevador do Bom Jesus do Monte, Braga
(4.4/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
Take a unique trip with Elevador do Bom Jesus do Monte, a funicular connecting Uptown Braga to a shrine and statue of Saint Longinus. Although a set of stairs--the Stairs of Bom Jesus--runs parallel to the track, riding the funicular feels like stepping back in time to 1882, when it was built. Its unique system of water counterbalancing involves loading water into the car at the top of the hill, weighing it down enough to descend again. At the bottom, the car is drained so it is light enough to ascend. A visit to Elevador do Bom Jesus do Monte represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Braga trip generator to plot your vacation.

  • Funicular, it claims to be the oldest in the world, and that it works by water. The mechanism itself is not hydraulic, but much simpler still: two wagons have a deposit below which can fill and/or empty of water. The car above, when you arrive at the station connects to a hose which fills the tank. This makes it that much more than the wagon below, which has the tank empty, despite and that overweight outweighs even the heaviest burden that can be the difference of passengers, therefore releasing brakes arrib wagon low gravity and drag down mate. Arriving down loose water and fellow up in turn fill your tank. Half way which changes the slope and cross when the two cars is made a short stop and will release some water. Naturally the mechanism works and is not wasteful, because there is surplus water throughout the year, not wasted since it comes from torrents that flow constantly and going to the River in any way.

  • We went up on the Elevador but bought return tickets that we never used. The walk up, especially in the heat of summer must be rather "sweaty" because it is a long way. However, the walk down is easy ...  more »

  • Do not miss this old elevator. It works with the counterweight of water with which load the cabins. Note as you fill it at the start of the downward travel. Precious tour. It is only 👍👍👍📷

  • Funicular railway to mount to the Bom Jesus! Because that climbs!

  • Muito interessante. Este elevador movido a água é muito catita. Pode apreciar tanto a subida como a descida. Recomendo o bilhete de ida e volta.
