Bom Jesus do Monte, Braga

Climb a long monumental stairway to reach Bom Jesus do Monte, a sanctuary and a Catholic place of pilgrimage, nestled on a hilltop above the city. Completed in 1811, the church features ornaments and decoration influenced by styles of different monuments in Portugal and colonial Brazil. The zigzag-shaped stairs contain Baroque-style dark granite and white plaster, whereas the rest of the site features neoclassical elements, sculptures, fountains, and ornamental gardens. You can also visit several chapels, which melt into the greenery of the place. Don't miss the chance to snap some photos of the area below from one of the panoramic overlooks. • Once it goes to Braga. It is a place that you should visit. Quaint and charming place. Since you can see a panoramic view of the city and surroundings. Typical photo from below the stairs.

  • My 6-year-old son insisted on climbing with me to stand up and the truth is that the ladder is long, not only what you see in the photos, but also about 6 or 7 lengths of 150 metres each one alternating steps. This first area is nice because it has plenty of shade and summer is appreciated. After company stair that looks in the photos, that in this paste good sunlight so I recommend getting wet head in the sources that exist along the way (that are not to drink, by the way), curious is that rest of the stairs at home there are a few sources that relate to the senses and I and my son laughed enough with each of them I guess that it is the way that becomes more enjoyable. The temple without much comment, had mine when we went and didn't bother much, found me interesting the altarpiece, which was designed as a great scenery. If you continue to rise behind the temple leads to artificial water caves or finally a pond with boats. We did the descent with the little train that goes up and down.

  • Such an enchanted location. Very romantic for couples and adventurous for families. Bring comfortable shoes because you will be walking and seeing so much, come completely comfortable. The entrance is a large park that greats you with a pond that you can take a boat ride in a little romantic touch, then onto the actual site, with everything looking like a storybook your eyes will be in awe of all the natural beauty and rustic charm. There is a place for coffee, snacks and dinner, however you can get even more creative by making a picnic experience. If you want the best experience without too many tourists and chance for incredible photos, arrive early in the morning, during the week and months which are considered cold, November, December, January.
  • The view is breathtaking. The basilica is baroque style and it's beautiful, unique altar. There's a beautiful via Crucis worth visiting too.
  • Bom Jesus is amazing - an oasis in Braga. It's perfect for hikes, walks, picnics with families and great place to take beautiful shoeselfies. Josefinas sneakers stand out from the landscape.
  • One of my fav part of this city! get lost and find yourself with architecture and nature! stairs and stairs!! dont miss this place
  • Beautiful mountain top religious site. If you walk to the top it's 520 steps, there is also a water elevator ride available or car parking along the way. 0.50€ fee to use the restrooms 🙂

Where to stay in Braga

Make the most of thousands of years worth of history in Braga by staying in a hotel in the city's celebrated town core. An array of mid-range hotels are wedged in among its winding streets and secluded squares; many of these feature decent rates and easy walking access to nearly all of Braga's popular sights. You can also opt for an apartment rental or guesthouse, most of which are offered by local residents to visitors, to get a similar old-town experience with a bit more privacy and independence. For some peace and quiet away from the tourist crowds, reserve a spot at the nearby monastery.
