Bom Jesus do Monte, Braga

Climb a long monumental stairway to reach Bom Jesus do Monte, a sanctuary and a Catholic place of pilgrimage, nestled on a hilltop above the city. Completed in 1811, the church features ornaments and decoration influenced by styles of different monuments in Portugal and colonial Brazil. The zigzag-shaped stairs contain Baroque-style dark granite and white plaster, whereas the rest of the site features neoclassical elements, sculptures, fountains, and ornamental gardens. You can also visit several chapels, which melt into the greenery of the place. Don't miss the chance to snap some photos of the area below from one of the panoramic overlooks. • If you've gotten already, then you should visit the nearby Braga and located there. A commune, which you reach by train from przecudownego Sao Bento train station in Porto. Rail ticket price is 6.90 euro in both parties for an adult. The trip, during which you can watch the Portuguese Province, takes a little over an hour. Then you should go by bus No. 2 from the train station (there are also rides the bus 12 from another location) for 1.90 euro directly at the entrance to the sanctuary. Buses took us ok. a 20-minute drive away. At this time of the year (March) the area Bom Jesus do Monte is extremely attractive, and the shrine leads the "path" the way of the cross, where you can see beautiful chapels – stations of the passion. Hike the stairs to the door of the sanctuary allows you to see interesting pieces of Catholic Saints and enjoy a spectacular view of the Valley of Braga and the surrounding mountains and the interesting ' mysterious gardens with typical trimmed trees ". The shrine itself also impresses and is a good place to settle and rest after climbing. I would definitely recommend.

  • It is very good to spend Easter in Braga, a city full of traditions, we stayed at the Quinta Dom José Rural tourism, visit the Bom Jesus and your beautiful Lake with boats for some beautiful pictures.

  • We took the funicular up, which was fun (tip: stand outside the cabin at the front) but the church itself was nothing special. View is far but mostly of the modern part of Braga with high-rises, so di...  more »

  • So glad the family and I decided to drive here for a day trip. It's less than an hour drive from Porto. I love the zigzag baroque staircase and the hilltop view overlooking the city. also really love the facade of the church as well as the surrounding area. There's a mansion/some sort of house nearby that seems very French to me. Loved the surrounding park/cobblestone walkway. We visited during a cloudy day and the pictures turned out so well. There is also a funicular for those who don't want to walk up the stairs. Definitely worth a visit!
  • Another hidden gem of Portugal, not crowded at all in off season. You can experience the bird's eye view of the town from here. There is a cafe and a hotel here. Don't miss the water operated tram while you are here. Take the tram to go up and stairs while coming down. Plenty of parking space, paid Eur 1 for 24 hours parking.
  • Perfect. The view from up just amazing you can see all Braga city down. Watching the sunset from there is breath taking. Highly recommended
  • Beautiful Church, really characteristic of Portugal. An example of Portuguese architecture in a nice green environment. The path to go up is really long, but it totally worth! Plus, the famous stairs that lead to the church are a must! For who doesn't want to walk there are also busses to go up and a very particular elevator.
  • Beautiful historical and religius place. The architecture as well as the nature at the area is amazing. It is located at the top of a hill, with perfect panoramic view of the city and the area around. The tour is also an interesting one, absolutely worth visiting.
