Bacalhoa Buddha Eden, Bombarral

#2 of 26 in Parks in Leiria District
Home to an extensive collection of Buddhas, statues, and other Asian-inspired artwork, Bacalhoa Buddha Eden is the largest Oriental complex of its kind in Europe. Founded in 2001 as a reaction to the Taliban's destruction of the famous Banyan Buddhas in Afghanistan, the garden has endeavored to preserve their memory. Wander the 35 hectares (86 acres) of green space with ponds, fountains, and pagodas, and try to get in touch with the area's mission of peace and understanding. You certainly won't miss the gigantic reclining Buddha statue designed to resemble those at Banyan, or the 2,200 individual replicas of China's famous Terra Cotta soldiers. Be sure to stop by the on-site wine store for a chance to sample one of Portugal's most famous exports, produced by a local company. Put Bacalhoa Buddha Eden into our Bombarral trip itinerary planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Place to visit, especially in the time that you don't have many visitors, to assimilate the environment and think about what is the organisation and the method that should guide the life of every one.

  • It was an unforgettable afternoon. From a certain point, it looks like we're even in a Asian country! Congratulations Comendador José Berardo. Very well designed! And this space is not for here! Will be extended until 2015!

  • Park in Bombarral, unusual but interesting. Huge place filed with different teams. Modern sculptures, metalwork, huge figurines of Buddha and more. The hours of walking in the peace and tranquility. At the end the possibility to visit local winery shop and by great wine from the region, or take a lunch in a restaurant.
  • An extensive open area with a broad range of sculptures from different continents on earth, with special emphasis on religious statues and meditating ambiances… The visit center is next to Quinta da Bacalhôa, a very good wine from a traditional and historic wine farm. In the visitors shop you have a broad offer of wines from this farm, unfortunately not at reduced prices except for some specific promotion of the week or season. A bit difficult to find if you only follow the sign roads…
  • Something for all the family - have a family day out with a picnic and finish off your visit via the wine shop - superb Sangria for sale. One visit will not be enough!
  • A nice Asian and now also African kind of vibe in the middle of our little Portugal. You can see alot of statues and art pieces about places and cultures and along the way you can also enjoy a nice walk and view. In the end you might feel tempted to try and buy a nice wine... it is really cheap and great so go for it.
  • Good place to take your kids. Lots of space to breathe fresh air play with water.
