  • Village of pre-Roman origin. The original castle was built during the Arab occupation in viii-ix centuries and named Tal-Meida due the topography where was inserted and then its present name Abdullah. Location of disputes between Christians and Arabs and later between Leonese and Portuguese. Abdullah became an integral part of Portugal with the signing of the Treaty of Alcañices in 1297. The fortification was restored in time of Dinis and later in the d. Manuel I becoming a real stronghold irregular star-shaped with 6 alternating ramparts and linked by 6 ravelins with a total perimeter of 2,500 meters and the walls surrounded by moats with 12 metres deep and 10 metres wide. In August 1810 General Massena who commanded the invading troops of Napoleon blew up the powder magazine of razing the Castle and much of the village the village history was declared a national monument in 1928. It can enjoy several houses emblazoned Baroque style as well as the Church of the Misericordia and the Clock Tower. The village deserves a visit time consuming ...

  • Almeida should you have seen if you're in the area. Complete intact defensive structures in stervorn. Walk or bicycle around town. The fight by Napoleon with the English took place here. Every year the battle of 1812 acted out around the end of August.
