Giewont Mountain, Zakopane

#2 of 19 in Parks in Zakopane
Giewont is a mountain massif in the Tatra Mountains of Poland, and is 1,895 metres AMSL at its highest.
It comprises three peaks (all m/metres in AMSL): Small Giewont - of Kondratowa, Małej Łąki and Strążyska. Long Giewont and Great Giewont are situated at a higher altitude than the nearby town of Zakopane, making them clearly visible from that city.
On Great Giewont, there is a 15 m steel cross (erected in 1901) - the site of religious pilgrimages. The area is notorious for its hazardous nature during thunderstorms, so this should be taken into consideration when approaching the summit.
Geologically, Giewont is composed of dolomite and limestone caves, as well as gneiss and granite in the southern section.
The first recorded ascent to Giewont's summit was undertaken in 1830 by Franciszek Herbich and Aleksander Zawadzki (the 19th century explorer, not the 20th century communist). The first winter ascent of Giewont occurred in 1904 by a group of five mountaineers led by Mariusz Zaruski. Nowadays the climbing on Giewont is strictly banned. On the other hand hiking on the hiking trails is allowed and the access (except the winter) is not difficult hence Giewont is a very popular destination among amblers and Sunday tourists. In the summer up to few thousands tourists a day ascend the top.

  • We got lucky that it wasnt a crowded day . We made the hike up and got the treat of the fantastic views at the cross. Coming down wasn't as easy as it got slippery but that is to be expected.  more »

  • Great but tough climb up in the middle, marked 3hrs 15min walk but managed it in 1hr 45min with my 10 year old daughter but we are pretty fit :) recommend leaving as early as possible as did get a little congested at the top where there are chains and afew slow people can cause a jam. We started 8:45 recommend a little earlier start then walk around to Kasprowy Wierchy along the peaks, great views of the valley and river over to Slovakia and far less people as a decent walk
  • Very nice hike to the top would recommend visiting. The only downside is the waiting line to get to the top. But once you there really worth the hike. Recommend walking all the way up there from kuznice for the full experience. Bring enough water and DON'T go up there if there's bad weather coming.
  • Just breathtaking views
  • perfect place for hiking! view is incredible ! i was during summer, so there were a lot of people. track is hard , but its worth to reach the top of this mountain! (i’m not a profesional hiker , just tried it during erasmus+ project)
  • Very crowded in the summer. Perfect for winter afternoon trip!
