St. Mary Magdalene Church, Wroclaw

(4.5/5 based on 130+ reviews on the web)
St. Mary Magdalene Church in Wrocław, Poland, is a gothic church located between Szewska and Laciarska street close to the central market square, established in the 13th century. Currently it is a cathedral of the Polish Catholic Church led by Piotr Mikolajczak. It was here that the first evangelical service in Wrocław was celebrated.DescriptionDuring the Second World War the church was seriously damaged. In 1945 the legendary Sinner's Bell, which was the biggest Silesian bell, was also damaged. St Mary Magdalene was rebuilt during the period 1947-1953.The most precious relic of the church is a Romanesque portal dating from the 12th century, coming from a Benedictine monastery on the river Elbing. The bridge connecting the two towers is called the "Mostek Czarownic" (Witches’ Bridge). A legend says that the shadows visible on the bridge are the souls of the girls who used to seduce men without wanting to be married, being scared of housekeeping. Indeed shadows represent women with brooms in their hands.BibliographyMalgorzata Urlich-Kornacka A guide to WrocławBeata Maciejewska Spacerownik Wrocławski

  • I don't know the exact number of stairs, concrete are numbered and shall bear the number of the last 156. Then you still have an estimated 40-45 steps of sheet metal. It's cool to handle, in the mezzanine are the Chair, here you can relax. The view is gorgeous, something like Paris with red-tiled roofs. When sestoupáte down, see the Church, particularly exposed to fragments of the original buildings and tombs are Romansh charming.

  • Recommended, it's just five zloty. You should be ready for climbing up on foot. There is only a stair with numerous steps.  more »
  • The Church with a rich and turbulent history, repeatedly burned, several times has fallen this or that portion of the building. Not live to far to supplement the missing metal helmets on the towers, by what seems like a bald;) In the middle of the white, painted on plaster "bricks" on the pillars and vaulting ribs. In addition to the solids interesting are the remains of epitafialne-boards, sculptures, statues-retained the original elements of the Church-all in all, unfortunately, very little of this. Besides the bridge of witches, which is a great vantage point from the Market at your fingertips. You have to climb it, and entrance costs 5 zlotys.
