St. Mary Magdalene Church, Wroclaw

(4.4/5 based on 120+ reviews on the web)
St. Mary Magdalene Church in Wrocław, Poland, is a gothic church located between Szewska and Laciarska street close to the central market square, established in the 13th century. Currently it is a cathedral of the Polish Catholic Church led by Piotr Mikolajczak. It was here that the first evangelical service in Wrocław was celebrated.DescriptionDuring the Second World War the church was seriously damaged. In 1945 the legendary Sinner's Bell, which was the biggest Silesian bell, was also damaged. St Mary Magdalene was rebuilt during the period 1947-1953.The most precious relic of the church is a Romanesque portal dating from the 12th century, coming from a Benedictine monastery on the river Elbing. The bridge connecting the two towers is called the "Mostek Czarownic" (Witches’ Bridge). A legend says that the shadows visible on the bridge are the souls of the girls who used to seduce men without wanting to be married, being scared of housekeeping. Indeed shadows represent women with brooms in their hands.BibliographyMalgorzata Urlich-Kornacka A guide to WrocławBeata Maciejewska Spacerownik Wrocławski

  • Were inside the Cathedral and walked to the observation deck. If you like the Catholic churches, you'll like it. View from the lookout too great. Recommend to visit.

  • Truly very impressive building. Excellent preservation of historic relics and remains and well worth a visit. The climb to the top is worth while.
  • It's definitely my climate when it comes to tourism. Built between 1226 -1232, was the first parish church, and in today's Gothic-shaped, brick masonry, ośmioprzęsłowej and three naves basilica was built between 1355-1360, and was the main temple of the city. In 1365 he himself emperor Charles IV Reich gave the temple the relics of the Patron Saint, and a thorn from Christ's Crown and a splinter from the cross of St. You cannot forget the bridge of witches (Witches) and related history! History, religion and magic blend together in an atmosphere of this place, located in the Centre of Wrocław, close to the Town Hall. Regards, Wrocławianka
