Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Wroclaw

4.7
#3 of 10 in Historic Sites in Wroclaw
Cathedral of St. John the Baptist stands tall, showcasing its twin spires, its elaborate medieval portal, and the 16th-century altarpiece of the sleeping Virgin Mary. The current Gothic church was built on the site of three former buildings, with work beginning on the existing cathedral in 1244. Notice the numerous motifs and gargoyles on the exterior, which tell many legends. On the southern wall, look for the petrified head of the jeweler's apprentice, who was punished for setting fire to his master's house in an act of revenge. The interior features stained-glass windows depicting the patron saints, tombstones and epitaphs from the 14th to the 17th centuries, and the largest pipe organ in Poland. Climb the 91 m (299 ft) tower for views of the city. -The Cathedral, its interior everyone receives different and although you do not need any advertising, however, we would like to recommend this place to everyone who have questioned the worth or not. After spending a long time inside, surely will remember this "different climate" and will come back here again. -To mention Prof. Małachowiczu, the architect who for decades took care of the Cathedral and Cardinal Gulbinowiczu who together led to the top of the towers of the Cathedral about 40 metre helmets-August 14, 1991. During World War II the Cathedral was destroyed in ok. 70%, after the war helmets have disappeared from the towers. We cordially invite you. Sports: Bozena and Richard

The most important temple in Wroclaw, the Church of the Archbishop of Wrocław. Beautiful gothic building, built in the 13th/14th century as the fifth at this point the Church (first cathedral of Wrocław he founded the Bolesław Chrobry in 1000r), rebuilt after 1945. It is worth to participate in such a place at mass. (on weekdays, in one of the chapels for the chancel-Baroque chapels survived the conflagration of war and did not require reconstruction). On the observation deck on the Tower elevator. The Cathedral and the Cathedral island you can also look at the other side of the Oder River (especially at night).

  • Amazing place to come and view the fantastic architecture of the island. I think the best time is in the night as they still have oil lamps here they are lit every night and it gives the place such a nice ambience.
  • Walking through the bridge to the Church Island and you will see beautiful riverside view.
  • Beautiful cathedral in Wroclaw. Nice walk from Old Town to the Cathedral.
  • Beautiful cathedral sorrounded by tiny colourful buildings. Oldest part of Wrocław
  • A wonderful church... a real piece of art must seen in Wrocłow.
