Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Wroclaw

4.7/5 based on 300+ reviews on the web
Cathedral of St. John the Baptist stands tall, showcasing its twin spires, its elaborate medieval portal, and the 16th-century altarpiece of the sleeping Virgin Mary. The current Gothic church was built on the site of three former buildings, with work beginning on the existing cathedral in 1244. Notice the numerous motifs and gargoyles on the exterior, which tell many legends. On the southern wall, look for the petrified head of the jeweler's apprentice, who was punished for setting fire to his master's house in an act of revenge. The interior features stained-glass windows depicting the patron saints, tombstones and epitaphs from the 14th to the 17th centuries, and the largest pipe organ in Poland. Climb the 91 m (299 ft) tower for views of the city. Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Wroclaw Edition.
