#18 of 56 in Museums in Warsaw
The Railway Museum in Warsaw is located in the former Warsaw Główna PKP railway terminus and is very near to the Warszawa Ochota railway station. The museum's exhibits are divided into permanent and temporary collections — the latter being displayed inside the museum's galleries. The permanent collection consists of historic rolling stock that is displayed on the tracks outside, including one of the few remaining armoured railway trains in Europe. The museum also contains a library which houses many books on the subject of Polish railways.During the interwar period the museum's headquarters were located at 1 Nowy Zjazd Street .On 30 July 2009, PKP S.A. the Polish state railway company served notice to quit on the Museum authorities requiring them to vacate their current location by 31 August 2009. However, as of May 2015, the museum remains in place and open to the public, offering low-cost entry and is perfect for large groups such as Stag Dos.

  • Despite that there is very little explanation in English, it was and nice collection of locomotives, rail cars and model trains.

  • Cool railway museum with plenty of models and bits and pieces inside but the magic stuff is outside where there are many trains parked in a few rows that you can go and walk amongst and climb into. Ve...  more »
  • An interesting but a little old-fashioned museum. There are train models and some model trains and other memorabilia on the Polish railway. Out in the yard, there is a large collection of older steam and diesel locomotives and railcars. The visit took about 1-1,5 hours.

  • Here you can find a lot of train models, historic information, photos, etc. On the outside there are a few dozens of real carriages and locomotives, some of which you can enter and see from the driver's place. Great place, totally recommend visiting if you like trains.
  • Incredible collection also open-air with a great atmosphere. The museum building is an old railway station and outside, at the platforms, there is a great collection of trains from different times. During the Museum's Night there were even some reconstruction groups. Really loved it!
  • That museum is totally maladjusted to foreign tourists. Poor English descriptions. Most interesting stories are available only in Polish. Totally incomprehensible.
  • loved seeing all those large train models. also that smell of railway in the air. Unfortunately steam trains outside are in bad shape and rusting away. Those desperately need saving from weather conditions.
  • Very nice that you were allowed to board some of the trains!

Where to stay in Warsaw

Many centrally located hotels in Warsaw cater mostly to business travelers, which makes them much too expensive for backpackers and other visitors on a limited budget. Although hostels may seem like the only affordable option at the height of the season, you can find less expensive lodgings in mid-range hotels on the outskirts of town. Alternatively, time your visit for the weekend, when many hotels near the city center slash their prices and offer special deals for early booking.
