Sigismund's Column, originally erected in 1644, is located in Castle Square, Warsaw, Poland and is one of Warsaw's most famous landmarks. The column and statue commemorate King Sigismund III Vasa, who in 1596 had moved Poland's capital from Kraków to Warsaw.
On the Corinthian column, 8.5 m high, a sculpture of the King, 2.75-metres high, in archaistic armour is placed. Sigismund's Column now stands at 22 metres and is adorned by four eagles. The king is dressed in armor and carries a cross in one hand and wields a sword in the other.
17th century Erected between 1643 and 1644, the column was constructed on the orders of Sigismund's son and successor, King Władysław IV Vasa. It was designed by the Italian-born architect Constantino Tencalla and the sculptor Clemente Molli, and cast by Daniel Tym. The Zygmunt's Column was modelled on the Italian columns in front of Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore (erected in 1614 to designs of Carlo Maderno), and the Column of Phocas in Rome (Władysław Vasa had seen both of them during his visit to Rome in 1625).

  • Sigismundo III's Column (Kolumna Zygmunta III Wazy) at the 22-metre-high Plac Zamkowy is constituted by a Corinthian granite column topped by the bronze statue of the king. It is the oldest secular statue of Warsaw, dated 1644.

  • Quite bland is this tall column with Sigismund at the top. No embellishments or frills on the column. Nothing must but you can hardly miss this.

  • Heart of Old Town of Warsaw! It’s impossible to skip that place during your visit to Warsaw! Nice piece of history! Very nice and photogenic. There are a lot of people there all the time, so it’s better to wake up earlier to get better shots!
  • I was there when an important public figure had passed away. Was very busy but was beautiful. So much to experience in this little area
  • Warsaw old Town is amazing, even when is a small place you can easily spend the entire day between the watchtower, the museum, eating in the cafes, walking around and enjoying the views, you can get a few perfect pictures and if lucky enough you can book a room in one of the hotels in old Town.
  • Highly recommended place to visit. I really enjoyed it
  • If you are chanced to be in Warsaw for more than a day I would recommend a free walking tour of the old town. This is the starting point and there is a very nice history lesson of the city's past right from this column
