Wawel Cathedral, Krakow

Once the site of royal coronations, Wawel Cathedral represents one of Poland's most significant religious and architectural sites. Two previous buildings burned down here before the church was erected more than nine centuries ago. The present-day cathedral, a Gothic structure, features several chapels built in different architectural styles. As you enter, notice the chain hanging to the left of the main iron door. Made of prehistoric animal bones, this chain is known for having magical powers that ensure the continued presence of the cathedral. To learn more about the large collection of sarcophaguses and altarpieces, take a guided tour. • It's up on the hill, so expect to hike up a little bit. Historical stone streets lead up to the Cathedral. The vista and views from up top are fair when you can get to them, but nothing quite so...  more »

  • Well worth a visit even if religion is not your thing. Staircase to and above the bells is amazing and gives a good view of Krakow.  more »
  • As with lots in Krakow, free to visit unless you want to pay for a tour. Beautiful cathedral with the tombs and places of rest for previous religious or monarchical figures. Be respectful and don't take photos but a nice piece of history.
  • It is quite big! Few minutes of walking from the city centre. It's got numerous things to see. Overall, it's one of the best castles to visit in not only in Poland but the world. I was not allowed to click pictures inside the cathedral which I know why it was so important.
  • Beautiful Krakow, highly recommend a visit, plenty to do and see. People very friendly and most speak good English. Excellent food at reasonable prices.
  • Adding even more value to the Wawel Castle, the Cathedral is one of the most beautiful I've been here in Poland both from outside and inside. Many polish princes, bishops, Kings have their tombs here. Inside the Cathedral, you can walk around, go the Bell Tower (bit a claustrophobic), Tombs (with many beautiful coffins), and crypt. The cathedral has a lot of beautiful and charming chapels, each one different from the other. On top of the Bell tower, you have a beautiful city view but I'm not sure it worth going all the way to top. The tomb and crypt are also nice but you would have to read about the people who is there to get even more interested.
  • Listen for the horn music, the music stops halfway for a pause in honor of the guards man who gave his life to save Krakow. The story is that this watch tower had a man on guard which was sounding the trumpet to warn the people of the tartans invading. The tartans being great bows men shot an arrow through the throat of the trumpet player to stop the warning sound. Then the horn will finish the music . This happens every hour of the day.
