The Barbican (Barbakan), Krakow

4.2
Learn the history of the city's defensive walls at The Barbican (Barbakan), a historical gateway leading into the Old Town. The circular fortress with an inner courtyard and seven turrets was added to the city's fortifications along the coronation route in the late 15th century. Look for a tablet on its eastern wall commemorating the feat of a local burgher who defended the city by shooting a Russian commander with a coat button. Notice forwarded balconies with floor hatches that were used to pour melted lead, boiling oil, or to throw projectiles. Now the fortification hosts medieval pageants, jousting contests, summer concerts, and theater performances. This is part of the history of the city and it should be visited as part of the tour. The views are good and it's a nice walk.  more »

It is the rest, rehabilitated, a Barbican of Kraków wall. It is brick, like almost everything here.

  • The last remains of ancient city fortifications, now replaced by a pleasant linear park. The last bastion completely rebuilt that at times is fake. Included in the tourist card deserves to be visited if you have time and not too many expectations. @gargio76
  • Quite nice and impressive. Be aware that whole trip takes only few minutes and time for pictures
  • Very nice restored fortification of the city defences. A must see if you are a tourist visiting Krakow.
  • Wonderful fortress ahead of main gate to middle-aged city. You can imagine here how to defeat walls were placed and we're massive. Must see in Krakow
  • if you make a freetour sure that it starts here. Beautiful place in Krakow

Where to stay in Krakow

Krakow ranks among one of Europe's increasingly popular tourist destinations, which is reflected in the rising costs of comfortable lodgings. The best hotels are concentrated in and around the historical old town, where five-star luxury comes at a very steep price. Old town hotels place you just steps from fine shops and restaurants, as well as the city's main museums and galleries. However, if your trip involves a tight budget, avoid the central district and check out mid-range hotels and economical hostels in one of the outlying neighborhoods.
