The Barbican (Barbakan), Krakow
(4.2/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web)
Learn the history of the city's defensive walls at The Barbican (Barbakan), a historical gateway leading into the Old Town. The circular fortress with an inner courtyard and seven turrets was added to the city's fortifications along the coronation route in the late 15th century. Look for a tablet on its eastern wall commemorating the feat of a local burgher who defended the city by shooting a Russian commander with a coat button. Notice forwarded balconies with floor hatches that were used to pour melted lead, boiling oil, or to throw projectiles. Now the fortification hosts medieval pageants, jousting contests, summer concerts, and theater performances. Work out when and for how long to visit The Barbican (Barbakan) and other Krakow attractions using our handy Krakow travel itinerary planner.

  • Built for military use to protect St. Florian's Gate. Architecture is very interesting. Hopefully you will see one of the resident cats sunning itself or playing with a mouse.
  • I don't know, honestly, what is Barbican (opening is made in the wall if they observe the surroundings of the fortification and if they shoot arrows against invaders). Both in Krakow, and in Warsaw, they are exponents and comprise the set of towns preserved.

  • Fine place to have to learn more about the history of the city. With large panels is a lot. The price for the entrance is so low that you shouldn't skip.

  • You must see this well preserved medieval structure and walk in the tunnels of its castle walls. Truely amazing. Some parts were closed because of restoration, the time I visited but the rest was good enough.
  • Simply great place, one of must-sees in Kraków. There are events inside from time to time which I'd definitely recommend to go to if you had a chance. It was a part of the wall that was around entire main square and surroundings. It's awful that in 19th century Austrian Guberium decided to destroy the walls.
  • Fortified outpost which was a gateway into the city. It is still in great condition. There would have been a moat surrounding it back in the day. From this point many of the walking tours begin
  • One of the most characteristic old buildings in Krakow. Nicely looking outside. I've never been inside though.
  • Warto zobaczyć
