The Barbican (Barbakan), Krakow
(4.2/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
Learn the history of the city's defensive walls at The Barbican (Barbakan), a historical gateway leading into the Old Town. The circular fortress with an inner courtyard and seven turrets was added to the city's fortifications along the coronation route in the late 15th century. Look for a tablet on its eastern wall commemorating the feat of a local burgher who defended the city by shooting a Russian commander with a coat button. Notice forwarded balconies with floor hatches that were used to pour melted lead, boiling oil, or to throw projectiles. Now the fortification hosts medieval pageants, jousting contests, summer concerts, and theater performances. • very cool place, in the middle of the Planty. I was taking a walk and then I saw the big iron frame, just in front of the Barbarican, don't miss it!
  • It is one of the points for what happens at one of the entrances to the old city. It was originally for the defense of it. Cute construction.

  • Just outside Porta San Floriano you see this truly imposing bastion. the visit is extra but is very cheap. It is a mix of history, trivia and architecture. PS. Better go around.

  • You must see this well preserved medieval structure and walk in the tunnels of its castle walls. Truely amazing. Some parts were closed because of restoration, the time I visited but the rest was good enough.
  • Simply great place, one of must-sees in Kraków. There are events inside from time to time which I'd definitely recommend to go to if you had a chance. It was a part of the wall that was around entire main square and surroundings. It's awful that in 19th century Austrian Guberium decided to destroy the walls.
  • Fortified outpost which was a gateway into the city. It is still in great condition. There would have been a moat surrounding it back in the day. From this point many of the walking tours begin
  • One of the most characteristic old buildings in Krakow. Nicely looking outside. I've never been inside though.
  • Warto zobaczyć
