St. Florian's Gate, Krakow

4.5
#27 of 370 in Things to do in Krakow
Visit one of the architectural centerpieces in the city's old town at St. Florian's Gate. Built in the 14th century as part of a defensive wall against Turkish invasion, the tower has been restored since World War II, and its stone and colorful bas-relief of Saint Florin look almost new. The attraction also marks the beginning of the Royal Road, a route taken by the royal family through the center of town. At some point on your visit you may walk under the tower on your way into the center. Consider commemorating your introduction to Krakow with a photo near the iconic attraction. It is right at the end (or beginning) the florianska, next to the beautiful and relaxing Park shaped ring that surrounds the center of Krakow. I just saw it on the outside, but it is curious, and has aesthetic values.

At the end of St. Florian's street is St. Florian's Gate. Its walls present their works artists, inside it often play food artists. You can climb the stairs to the top, watch the walls and gate inside-there is a chapel (paid).

Amazing view on the street, which leads to the Market Square. That feeling, when standing at the balcony, being over the crowd and right inside at the time!

Where to stay in Krakow

Krakow ranks among one of Europe's increasingly popular tourist destinations, which is reflected in the rising costs of comfortable lodgings. The best hotels are concentrated in and around the historical old town, where five-star luxury comes at a very steep price. Old town hotels place you just steps from fine shops and restaurants, as well as the city's main museums and galleries. However, if your trip involves a tight budget, avoid the central district and check out mid-range hotels and economical hostels in one of the outlying neighborhoods.
