Learn the history of the city's defensive walls at Muzeum Krakowa - Barbakan, a historical gateway leading into the Old Town. The circular fortress with an inner courtyard and seven turrets was added to the city's fortifications along the coronation route in the late 15th century. Look for a tablet on its eastern wall commemorating the feat of a local burgher who defended the city by shooting a Russian commander with a coat button. Notice forwarded balconies with floor hatches that were used to pour melted lead, boiling oil, or to throw projectiles. Now the fortification hosts medieval pageants, jousting contests, summer concerts, and theater performances.
