Krakow Zoo (Ogrod Zoologiczny), Krakow

4.0
#1 of 19 in Parks in Krakow
Just outside the city, Krakow Zoo (Ogrod Zoologiczny) rests on a Jurassic plateau in a 17 hectare (42 acre) area. It is home to more than 1,400 animals including a herd of pygmy hippopotamuses and Przewalski horses, in addition to other animals. The latter only live in captivity, while many of the other zoo residents can be found in the wild in small numbers, such as snow leopards. Known for its successful breeding methods, the zoo shelters new animal babies--it is not uncommon to see a new cub or chick trotting after their mother in the habitats. You can purchase tickets at the attraction for a very affordable price, so consider taking a taxi to the zoo to save time. While there is no restaurant here, a cafe near the exit serves snacks and drinks. • Pretty nice zoo. Be prepared to spend 2 hours here, unless you skip a lot of animals. Most animals can be seen from very close but for antelopes and some kind of goats which are considered dangerous, for some reason. Not many options to eat or drink around so plan accordingly. It is also a good 20min by bus from Krakow center so a visit overall takes half a day
  • Small zoo with nice enclosures for most animals. Large exhibits for penguins and giraffes other animals like the sealion and elephants have small enclosures.cheap entrance price.
  • Lovely and clean, the animals looked healthy and well taken care of. My only criticism is all the information signs and the zoo plan are in Polish...... would be great if other languages were available.
  • Great place to take kids and ideal place for a walk. Set in the beautiful Las Wolski area in Krakow, the zoo is surrounded by woods and walking paths that link you to the Kopiec Pilsudskiego (a huge, man-made mound that provides fantastic views over Krakow and the surrounding area). The zoo itself is very charming. It's probably not up to the standards of the zoos in big cities in the West, but it has its charm all the same. It's very reasonably priced, as well - an adult pays 18 PLN, children are 10 PLN and under 4s go in for free. That's excellent value and the zoo will keep most first-time visitors entertained for at least 2-3 hours. The mini zoo is also great for kids as, on most days, kids are allowed to feed the animals. All in all, it's well worth a visit. Just three minor niggles: - There are no decent food or drink options. It's fast-food at its worst, which is a shame as there are lots of signs about respecting the greenery and the surrounding woods. It would be nice to see the same thought and consideration going into providing some form of bio or healthy eating options. - The experience isn't always consistent. Different animal feeders put more and less effort into making the feeding experience interesting for visitors. Some come in and have their routines, while some gloomily hand out food in ways that are almost intended to be as uninteresting as possible. Given that kids make up the majority of the visitors, it would be nice if more effort were invested in this. - The zoo is constantly undergoing some form of maintenance and renovation work, some of which results in parts being closed or not visible. It would be great to be aware of what is/isn't open before buying a ticket.
  • Nice compact zoo with decent number of animals. Has nice giraffe house and penguin pool. Wish there was more signs in English

Where to stay in Krakow

Krakow ranks among one of Europe's increasingly popular tourist destinations, which is reflected in the rising costs of comfortable lodgings. The best hotels are concentrated in and around the historical old town, where five-star luxury comes at a very steep price. Old town hotels place you just steps from fine shops and restaurants, as well as the city's main museums and galleries. However, if your trip involves a tight budget, avoid the central district and check out mid-range hotels and economical hostels in one of the outlying neighborhoods.
