Create an itinerary including Klodzko Fortress
Kłodzko Fortress is a unique fortification complex of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship in southwestern Poland. The fortress once was one of the biggest strongholds in Prussian Silesia, however, in the whole German Empire, it was regarded as a minor one. Now, together with an extensive network of tunnels, it is one of the biggest attractions of the town of Kłodzko, with its underground labyrinth and a repository of different objects, from old fire engines to local glassware.HistoryA stronghold on Kłodzko's Castle Hill was mentioned for the first time in the Chronicle of Bohemians, written by Cosmas of Prague. Most probably, it was a complex of wooden buildings, protected with a palisade. Kłodzko itself is located along the strategic route between Wrocław and Prague, and its role as a trading point must have been significant since the early Middle Ages. In 1114, the stronghold was captured and destroyed by Czech troops under prince Soběslav, who at the same time reconquered the whole area.In 1129, Soběslav rebuilt the town and placed a castellan there. Some time around 1300, a spacious castle was built on the hill, which became seat of the Kłodzko County. Gradually, the castle grew, a church and a chapel were added and in 1557, Lorenz Krischke, architect at the court of Prince Ernest of Bavaria, built the Lower Castle. In the 16th century, there were five wells in the castle with the oldest one from 1393. • The queue was way too long to go inside, so we went for a (free) walk alongside the fortress walls instead. This route offers excellent views over the entire city and hills, so I would recommend this alternative if you want to avoid the tourist trap inside. The walking route is a bit hidden. Starting at the base of the fortress, turn right at the first set of stairs instead of left where the paid access is. (Look for the metal staircase) The walking route is easily/safely accessible but does not make a full circle around the fortress, so you either have to backtrack or go down a forest path at the end.
  • Nothing special, but interesting to see. Guided tour in the labyrinth was in Polish only, and the guide was speaking too fast - we understood close to nothing.. And it was very cold inside (as it was underground).
  • We liked the place. It's interesting for adults as good as for kids. I liked the exhibition of solders life, and our son liked the underground excursion. But be careful with some tricky pieces of tunnels, where you must almost crawl. Not for high people ;)
  • Amazing fortress with a great view of the town. My favorite part was the guided tour of the defense tunnels. Our tour guide only spoke Polish but they offer pamphlets in English.
  • Lovely town and quite interesting views from the fortress. Nice walk around with views of the surrounding. Shame that the price of the entrance is so stiff! I would have gave it more stars. 😕
