Fortress Klodzko (Twierdza Klodzko), Klodzko
(4.4/5 based on 190+ reviews on the web)
Kłodzko Fortress is a unique fortification complex of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship in southwestern Poland. The fortress once was one of the biggest strongholds in Prussian Silesia, however, in the whole German Empire, it was regarded as a minor one. Now, together with an extensive network of tunnels, it is one of the biggest attractions of the town of Kłodzko, with its underground labyrinth and a repository of for different objects, from old fire engines to local glassware.HistoryFirst mentions of existence of a stronghold placed on Kłodzko's Castle Hill come from the Chronicle of Bohemians, written by Cosmas of Prague. Most probably, it was a complex of wooden buildings, protected with a palisade. Kłodzko itself is located along the strategic route between Wrocław and Prague, and its role as a trading point must have been significant since the early Middle Ages. In 1114, the stronghold was captured and destroyed by Czech troops under prince Soběslav, who at the same time reconquered the whole area.In 1129, Soběslav rebuilt the town and placed a castellan there. Some time around 1300, a spacious castle was built on the hill, which became seat of the Kłodzko County. Gradually, the castle grew, a church and a chapel were added and in 1557, Lorenz Krischke, architect at the court of Prince Ernest of Bavaria, built the Lower Castle. In the 16th century, there were five wells in the castle with the oldest one from 1393.

  • Of course, that this is the attraction of Kłodzko, but I prefer it all, which testifies to the wisdom of mankind, rather than continuing the wars, attacks and agresjach, that is, all the stupidity of humanity. Much I appreciate the effort of renovation and reconstruction of Florida after the flood in 1997, I appreciate all forms of beauty, activities for the benefit of society such as Mills, folusze, bakeries, windmills, and sadness me are camps of annihilation, fortresses, sidewalks, minerskie, etc. Moreover, most of the property world notes rightly that the biggest advantage of this place is ... views! Well-not the gloomy dungeons, which was made and used solely for the purpose of destructive. And let there not be composed of those who have a problem with claustrophobia-it really low pavements, nasty, narrow and any views, there is no brr.

  • A remarkable place. Particularly impressive are making tunnels. The guide tells interesting stories and provides experience letting tourists in meters high tunnels or extinguishing the light. It is a pity that some genius came up with the idea to blow up one of the wells, which flooded the tunnels below. By this attraction, which has survived the centuries has been partially irretrievably lost. Trivia associated with this place, it's several years of training people from the SWL, no blow up the tunnels, the capture of the fortress by the French in a way that is unusual, the presence of replica Red 102.

  • This is a massive fortress with lots of history - both as a military facility and a detention facility. It is possible to stroll around without a guided tour (we did), which lets one appreciate how la...  more »

  • It's OK but I expected something more. Impressive from outside but inside there is nothing interesting.
  • A great place to visit! Must see if you are interested in military or history.
  • Względnie ciekawe są tyljo tunele minerskie.
  • A beautiful piece of history. Kłodzko has played an important role during the defence of Silesia in the Franco-Prussian War. The Commander-in-Chief of the French troops in the fight for Silesia was Jerome Bonaparte. After the surrender of the Neisse River in the hands of the Prussian remained yet ziemia kłodzka with two fortresses in Kłodzko and Srebrna Góra. After the signing of the capitulation of the fortress in Koźle, Jerome decided to intensify activities aimed at the acquisition of Kłodzko. Fighting flared at the top Jaszkową. As a result the Allied forces advanced at the fortified camp of the fortress. In the night of 23/24 June an assault, in which hr Götzen decided to surrender the fortress. The next day, signed the Act of capitulation.
