Fortress Klodzko (Twierdza Klodzko), Klodzko
(4.4/5 based on 180+ reviews on the web)
Kłodzko Fortress is a unique fortification complex of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship in southwestern Poland. The fortress once was one of the biggest strongholds in Prussian Silesia, however, in the whole German Empire, it was regarded as a minor one. Now, together with an extensive network of tunnels, it is one of the biggest attractions of the town of Kłodzko, with its underground labyrinth and a repository of for different objects, from old fire engines to local glassware.HistoryFirst mentions of existence of a stronghold placed on Kłodzko's Castle Hill come from the Chronicle of Bohemians, written by Cosmas of Prague. Most probably, it was a complex of wooden buildings, protected with a palisade. Kłodzko itself is located along the strategic route between Wrocław and Prague, and its role as a trading point must have been significant since the early Middle Ages. In 1114, the stronghold was captured and destroyed by Czech troops under prince Soběslav, who at the same time reconquered the whole area.In 1129, Soběslav rebuilt the town and placed a castellan there. Some time around 1300, a spacious castle was built on the hill, which became seat of the Kłodzko County. Gradually, the castle grew, a church and a chapel were added and in 1557, Lorenz Krischke, architect at the court of Prince Ernest of Bavaria, built the Lower Castle. In the 16th century, there were five wells in the castle with the oldest one from 1393.

  • The fortress, really great. However, it's like it to present this extreme of amateurish. Part of the underground passages with very low activity of Lady guide the impression of walking on basement apartment block. A separate safety to explore the underworld, just turned off electricity, the only source of light is the phones, no communication with anyone who could help. Explore the external objects of the fortress is doing even worse. The guide is quite quaint guy who at the end of the route in the cheeky way of extorting money from the public, on the so-called own beer Foundation. The money it gives to the worn by the supposed "military caps". Very little talking about the fortress, but we were able to learn a lot about curly there just serial "four armored" this peculiar guy deliberately doing break 4-5 minutes, just at the gift shop, I will not "muddle along on and hung some there suspicions. To sum up, SO while there I hope someone sees this amateurism and do something about it.

The bastion of stretches a beautiful view of the city and the mountains in the distance. We strongly recommend visiting the underground maze of corridors minerskich, for a long time will remain in my memory. Guides in an interesting and accessible way, advocates of the fortress. • A beautiful piece of history. Kłodzko has played an important role during the defence of Silesia in the Franco-Prussian War. The Commander-in-Chief of the French troops in the fight for Silesia was Jerome Bonaparte. After the surrender of the Neisse River in the hands of the Prussian remained yet ziemia kłodzka with two fortresses in Kłodzko and Srebrna Góra. After the signing of the capitulation of the fortress in Koźle, Jerome decided to intensify activities aimed at the acquisition of Kłodzko. Fighting flared at the top Jaszkową. As a result the Allied forces advanced at the fortified camp of the fortress. In the night of 23/24 June an assault, in which hr Götzen decided to surrender the fortress. The next day, signed the Act of capitulation.
