Oliwa Cathedral, Gdansk

4.7
#4 of 10 in Historic Sites in Gdansk
Full to bursting with valuable artwork, Oliwa Cathedral serves as the final resting place of many of the region's prominent families. The great organ was designed in the 18th century by a Cistercian monk and features dramatic carved wood against the white vaulting above the congregation's heads. The angels balanced on top of the organ are movable. Other notable artworks adorn the walls and are worth a closer look as well. Basilica makes a very positive impression, but that's nothing compared with the authorities. I thought that nothing me in this field do not surprise you, but the power of this instrument is awe-inspiring. And I was only on the 20-minute show. If there is a chance visit to a full concert of the absolutely necessary.

Splendid. I come here every year. The organ concert that was being performed during my visit convinced me to buy the CD as well

Whether you are a religious person or not, this church is worth visiting. Been there during my last stay in 3city and I was stunned with its beauty. Highly recommend.

Hadn't planned to visit the church but we had a couple of spare hours so popped in to have a look - and certainly glad we did! Quite stunning interior with many paintings and very old furniture items with paintings on them too. There are several rooms with stunning architecural pieces and intricate carvings/masonry work. Didn't get to hear any of the organs but I understand they offer free recitals for tourists during the summer season. The cathedral is only a short (5min) walk from Oliwa Park so combine the two if you can. Take a bit of loose change as I'm sure you'll feel compelled to donate.
