Green Gate (Brama Zielona), Gdansk

4.5
The Green Gate in Gdańsk, Poland, is one of the city's most notable tourist attractions. It is situated between Long Market and the River Motława.HistoryWith the Golden Gate and the Highland Gate, the Green Gate spans the Long Market and Long Street, together comprising the Royal Route. The Green Gate was clearly inspired by the Antwerp City Hall. It was built 1568-71 as the formal residence of Poland's monarchs. It is a masterpiece by Regnier (or Reiner van Amsterdam), an Amsterdam architect, and reflects Flemish architectural influence in Gdańsk. Hans Kramer from Dresden was responsible for the construction plans. On 11–20 February 1646 the future Queen of Poland, Marie Louise Gonzaga, was entertained here. In the late 18th century the Nature Society was housed here, but soon moved to the Naturalists' House (Research Society House).Today the Green Gate houses the National Museum in Gdańsk. Exhibitions, meetings, conferences and shows are held here. The Gdańsk office of former Polish President Lech Wałęsa is located in one of the rooms.

When we were in Gdansk was a festival in town so it was full with stalls just outside the door which made it very crowded. Can imagine it is a bit nicer here without all the stalls.

Historic place which is interesting to see but it could be done and kept in better shape and with more sophistication.  more »

Gdansk has a lot of great old ports, of which this was one of the most scenic mountainous spots. Looks great when it is approaching the ul. Dlugaa along.

  • Beautiful but there is an ad blocking it on one side...
  • If possible, I recommend that you visit in the morning (before 9 AM). That way you can walk around and enjoy some serenity along with the beauty. Because, before you know it, the place will be overrun with tourists!
  • Worth to see
  • Nice building.
  • The Green Gate is one of the most notable tourist attractions in Gdansk. Designed by a Duch, clearly bears the marks of Flemmish architecture. It marks the start of the Long Market (Długi Targ) near the River Motława. Very picturesque and always very crowded.
