Crane (Zuraw), Gdansk

4.4
Explore navigational aids, cargo handling techniques, and a merchant's premises, plus reception rooms and local craft workshops at the exhibits of Crane (Zuraw). The oldest surviving port crane in Europe, with two brick towers and a wooden lifting mechanism in between, was built in the 15th century. See its internal mechanisms with two pairs of wheels fitted with wooden beams, which workers had to cross to set the wheels in motion. As a division of the maritime museum, the crane showcases life in a port city in times of its greatest prosperity, between the 16th and 18th centuries. Definitely very characteristic, is the largest port crane in medieval Europe. Inside is the propulsion mechanism, we can admire by going under them. Nice also to see the other side of the river.

It cannot be visited inside, or at least I didn't like, but is a historical curiosity and a building of interest

You should look at this great building in any case in Gdansk. It is of course also important that it deals with the history and the base of the building. The location is right in the old town on the water. You can hardly miss the building.
