Colombia's heart and soul, Bogota has earned the nickname "Athens of South America" thanks to its abundance of universities, libraries, and lower-level schools.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Gold Museum (Museo del Oro) and Mount Monserrate. Get outdoors at Laguna de Guatavita and Cascada La Chorrera. Change things up with these side-trips from Bogota: Capillas de Siecha (in Guasca), Parque Natural Chicaque (in Chicaque) and Catedral de Sal (in Zipaquira). There's much more to do: admire the masterpieces at Museo Botero del Banco de la Republica, grab your bike and head to Ciclovia de Bogota, take in the architecture and atmosphere at Iglesia de San Francisco, and steep yourself in history at Bolivar plaza.

Santa Marta

Many visitors begin their Santa Marta holiday, surrounded by urban clutter and heavy traffic, expecting little from the city in terms of historical importance.
Get a sense of the local culture at The Lost City and Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino. Step out of the city life by going to Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona and Scuba & Snorkeling. Take a break from Santa Marta with a short trip to Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Minca, about 1h 30 min away. Spend the 29th (Fri) exploring nature at Nabusimake. Nestled between rising hills in a narrow valley, Medellin serves as an energetic melting pot of people from all socio-economic classes.

Founded in 1842, the town of Salento represents the oldest established settlement in Quindio.

The coral San Andres Island boasts a rich colonial history, exotic beaches, and a laidback, tropical lifestyle.

The site of the continent's first Spanish colony, Cartagena retains much of its colonial flavor thanks to a World Heritage-listed old town, encircled by old walls and protected by imposing fortresses.
Get a sense of the local culture at San Felipe de Barajas Castle and Sanctuary of Saint Peter Claver. Museo del Oro Zenu and Museo Historico de Cartagena de Indias will appeal to museum buffs.
