Hidden high up in the Japanese Alps, Takayama remained largely cut off from the rest of Japan for centuries, allowing the local culture to grow in relative isolation.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Step out of Kyoto with an excursion to Universal Studios Japan in Osaka--about 1h 15 min away. The adventure continues: get great views at Kiyomizu-dera, take a stroll through Gion, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kinkaku-ji, and steep yourself in history at Heian Shrine.

Yokohama

Once a small fishing town, Yokohama was one of the first ports to welcome foreign trade in the 19th century, after which it grew into Japan's second largest city and a bustling metropolis.
Start off your visit on the 28th (Thu): steep yourself in history at Hase-dera, then appreciate the history behind Kōtoku-in, and then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: take in the views from Yokohama Bay Bridge, admire the natural beauty at Sankeien Gardens, then stroll through Yamashita Park, and finally shop like a local with Yokohama Chinatown.

Sitting at the foot of Mount Fuji, Hakone-machi has become a popular retreat from Tokyo for locals and tourists alike.
