Tokyo holds the status of most populous metropolitan area in the world--a fact you'll find tangible as you walk the bustling streets and explore its diverse neighborhoods and cultures.
Tokyo National Museum and Imperial Palace are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Escape the urban bustle at Odaiba Kaihin Koen (Odaiba Seaside Park) and Mt. Mitake. Next up on the itinerary: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Sensō-ji, take a stroll through Akihabara, admire the striking features of Tokyo Tower, and don't miss a visit to Meiji Jingu.

Detroit, USA to Tokyo is an approximately 25-hour flight. Due to the time zone difference, you'll lose 14 hours traveling from Detroit to Tokyo. Traveling from Detroit in October, expect Tokyo to be a bit warmer, temps between 71°F and 65°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 17th (Tue) early enough to drive to Matsumoto.

A castle town, Matsumoto possesses one of the best-preserved feudal structures in the country, and maintains its historical attractions and traditions while simultaneously exuding a modern, cosmopolitan charm.
Start off your visit on the 17th (Tue): contemplate the long history of Kaichi School Museum, take a stroll through Nawate Shopping District, then wander the streets of Nakamachi Street, then explore the world behind art at Matsumoto City Museum of Art, and finally contemplate the long history of Yohashira Shrine.

You can drive from Tokyo to Matsumoto in 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or do a combination of bus and train. Prepare for slightly colder weather when traveling from Tokyo in October: high temperatures in Matsumoto hover around 66°F and lows are around 54°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 18th (Wed) early enough to travel to Omachi.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Your inner history buff will appreciate Sanjusangendo Temple and Kiyomizu-dera. Your cultural itinerary includes sights like Gion and Nijo Castle. There's still lots to do: contemplate the long history of Fushimi Inari Taisha, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kinkaku-ji, admire the natural beauty at Shosei-en Garden, and get outside with Arashiyama.
