  • Philippine president, Ferdinand Marcos dedicated the bridge to his wife, Imelda, who was known as "the Rose of Tacloban". It served as a birthday gift and testimonies of his love for her. Now is the time to go over and see the San Juanico Bridge. It's a closer 2.2 kilometres long and is the longest bridge in the Republic of the Philippines. It stretches from Leyte to Samar. Construction began in 1969 over the San Juanico Strait from Cabalawan to the municipality of Santa Rita, on Samar and the completion in 1973. San Juanico Bridge was constructed as part of the Pan-Philippine Highway (commonly known as the Maharlika Highway), a network of roads, bridges and sea routes that connect the islands of Luzon, Samar, Leyte, and Mindanao in the country. Connecting Tacloban City on Leyte side and Santa Rita town on Samar Island Bridge offers many picturesque views, particularly in the San Juanico Strait with its thousand whirlpools as well as islands in the province. It takes about 10 minutes from downtown Tacloban City and is available for passengers in the jeepney, bus, motorcab or private vehicles. The bridge has 43 teams and boats medium can pass under his big head bow whose peak rises 41 metres above sea level. It crosses the narrow San Juanico Strait, which connects the islands of Samar and Leyte on the Republic of the Philippines. It's the narrowest Strait in the Republic of the Philippines with only two kilometres wide at its narrowest point. It is also said to be the narrowest in the world. But the Bosporus, a strait that forms part of the border between Europe and Asia, is less than 800 metres wide at the tightest body instead.
