Sumaguing Cave, Sagada

4.7
#1 of 37 in Parks in Cordillera Region
Known by its nickname "Big Cave," Sumaguing Cave has the largest chambers of any cave in the area. Experience this natural wonder and its limestone formations via guided walking tours or spelunking. Though the latter is more adventurous, the former is very informative and entertaining. But be warned--if you have a fear of heights or tight spaces, this attraction may not be right for you. • Great cave though best if you are young and fit. We did this journey and enjoyed the adventure however, our bodies paid the price for the rest of the day. The walk in was expected with lots of stairs ...  more »

  • The guides were cool. You have to be very careful with your steps though. It is very slippery when wet. Make sure that you're wearing a footwear that is durable enough when entering this cave as this cave is known as the killer of slippers and sandals.
  • Very old cave formation....It's quite adventurous and really refreshing experience down there and the caves have water flow with small falls and an unknown depth pond ...Caves are full of different rock formation like giant tortoise formation and dinosaur footprint and mother giving childbirth to name a few.. Advice: a guide is necessary to make it into and out of the caves. And the guides are very very helpful without them our group would have taken for ever to reach top.
  • Be really prepared when you go here. There is a part where you have to go barefoot and will get wet, so it is advisable to not wear jackets and just wear light clothing and to not bring big cameras or bags as well. Be ready physically since it will be really exhausting but the local guides are really helpful and will entertain you as well with stories around the cave.
  • One should be ready to get dirty in entering this cave. I suggest that you bring gloves here, it will indeed help you a lot through your journey down below the ground. Bats feces and urine are everywhere in the second stage / level of this cave so brace yourself to the smell and be careful not to slip as it gets slippery. Better wear leggings or right attire before you enter this beautiful cave as it will surely give you a souvenir of bruises and scars. Good luck!
  • Slippery when wet... and it is wet inside the cave so be sure to prepare for it. Suggested to bring your own lamp though if you are going during peak season, you dont need it because every guide has one and it can be too crowded.

Where to stay in Sagada

Though remote, Sagada has established itself as a tourist destination, and therefore offers a range of accommodations for its guests. You won't find sparkling new hotels here, but that's the point. Seemingly every house acts a guesthouse across the modest urban area close to the bus stop. You'll find some offering a few more facilities, like onsite restaurants serving local cuisine, hot water, outdoor activity equipment rental, and tour booking. Some have a particularly rustic aspect to them, with their wooden designs fitting in with the landscape that surrounds, while some others remain very basic indeed.
