Echo Valley, Sagada

4.0
#2 of 10 in Trails in Luzon
Visitors are welcome to shout it out at at Echo Valley. Take a walk through nature to the viewpoint, from which you can see the main attraction of the valley--the coffins hanging from a cliff. This type of burial is traditional for the Igorot culture (they perform it because they believe the higher the deceased are, the closer they are to heavens). Most visitors can't resist shouting out so they can hear their own voice come back to them, thus the name. • Echo Valley's entry is just about 5 to 10 minutes walk from town center where the tourism office is located. In the entry there's a tourism booth that will check your environmental fee receipt and you have to register at their booth. After registration you will climb a high stairs going to the Echo Valley Booth that collects entrance fee which is 10 pesos per person. Then you will continue to trek to the town's public cemetery before you proceed in trekking to the cliffs of Echo Valley. Don't worry because there's cement steps with metal railings so it's not that hard. But it is very tiring. You will reach Echo Valley first before you continue to trek again going further down to the most famous (I suppose) hanging coffins of Sagada. The air just smells so nice because of the pine trees. Other activities aside from trekking are site seeing from Echo Valley, rock climbing and church visit since it's very close to the local parish.
  • I love the ambiance of the place. The greenery, the hanging coffin, the church and the famous cemetery, everything is just a walk away from each other.
  • The Echo Valley has nothing more to show you than the echo it creates when shouting at the location. This is also the same way towards the hanging coffin. We passed by the cemetery which was really weird to be a tourist spot. I guess its just me! The tour guide showed us a couple of tombs which was for me really unnecessary. Glad we found pine combs that were pretty in photos.
  • Sagada is the closest I can get of having that feel of Machu Picchu here in the Philippines. Way back before the "Facebook/IG travelers" and "post RomCom adventurers" flock on these well hidden, and well protected places, these places are very tranquil and trash free natural site we have. I wish travelers nowadays should be more mature and educated in terms of the places they wander, instead of taking selfies for the sake of instant vanities. To all LGU, NGO and environmental advocates, IEC (information, education, communication) is the key for sustainable tourism in this country.
  • Short trip to the hanging coffins is fine.

Where to stay in Sagada

Though remote, Sagada has established itself as a tourist destination, and therefore offers a range of accommodations for its guests. You won't find sparkling new hotels here, but that's the point. Seemingly every house acts a guesthouse across the modest urban area close to the bus stop. You'll find some offering a few more facilities, like onsite restaurants serving local cuisine, hot water, outdoor activity equipment rental, and tour booking. Some have a particularly rustic aspect to them, with their wooden designs fitting in with the landscape that surrounds, while some others remain very basic indeed.
