Apo Reef is the largest coral atoll-like reef in the Philippines and the second largest contiguous coral reef in the world. It is a sub-triangular coral atoll formation approximately 26 kms from the north to the south tip and 20 kms from east to west. It is separated by two lagoon systems, the north and south lagoons which are bounded by narrow reef platforms. It is a 34 sq km sub triangular northern m and southern atoll like reefs separated by a 30-m deep channel that is open to the west. The channel runs east to west from 1.8 m to 30 m deep with a fine white sand bottom numerous mounds and patches of branching corals under the deep blue water. The north lagoon is an enclosed triangular coral reef platform partly exposed during low tide. It is relatively shallow with depths of about 2-10 meters. On the other hand, the south lagoon is an inverted triangular coral platform enclosed on two sides and is about 30 meters in depth. Likewise, reef limestone and coralline sand on the east and southeastern sides dominantly underlie the area.

  • I've been to Apo Reef with a day trip 2 days on the boat, I was perhaps full of too many expectations, so I was disappointed. I state that I have not diver (but also the divers who were with us were not thrilled). The barrier, possibly due to typhoons or for heating the sea, comes in lots of dead corals points, grey, without color. On the other hand you see enough fish, but even those cannot be compared to the quantity and variety that you see in the Maldives. The best spots are the ones near the island Apo, which is delicious, it would be worthwhile to get to sleep. Overall I have seen better in other parts of the Philippines

  • Tons of big fish including a mantha ray, great! We did a day trip only. A two-day trip wouöd be even better. Shop around for reasonable prices. We went with Gustav's off-season promo.  more »
  • The reef is located slightly far from the next Bank and the diving trip then costs much for Philippine standards well above average, but the effort was worth more than. Compared to the waters unfortunately empty fished in many places, otherwise this is dreamlike APO reef. This also applies to the island itself, which man but not close to Dumaguete (Negros) geographically should be confused island with the very nice APO. 3 dives with the sympathetic Albert from the Pentagon were sensational Pro Dive Centre, so far my best ever. Although I have completed only a 1 day trip, I'd move but also a (for example in the hammock brought free) overnight for the next visit to consider more time to the relax and in addition to snorkeling.
