Plaza Cuartel, Puerto Princesa

(3/5 based on 200+ reviews on the web)
Behind a cathedral and near the old fort sits Plaza Cuartel, dedicated to the memory of the American soldiers who were burned alive by the Japanese in World War II. Near the end of the war, Japanese forces imprisoned 143 American soldiers and forced them to enter the narrow tunnel, which they doused with gasoline and set on fire. See the memorial plates and pictures of the 11 survivors. The memorial stone in the center of the square--topped by a figurine of a man in chains--bears the names of all the solders from the garrison. • It is a small park with a monument 150 Americans killed in World War II. It is interesting to see and read a little history. The views of the Bay from there deserve much the penalty. It is also right next to the Cathedral.

  • A small park with a WWII memorial of a Japanese massacre on 110 Americans. Seems that a project is on going to create a better structure. The gate is interesting and in its beautiful decadence.
  • WWII memorial park. Nothing visually spectacular, but it has a loaded history worth reading about and some beautiful entrance gates.
  • The place is getting better, with the improvements going around the place. This is a medium-sized park where you'll see at least one couple hanging around. If you just went to the city's cathedral for a prayer/visit, then why not go here? Plaza Cuartel is just across the street.
  • It tells you what happened during the Japanese occupation of Puerto Princesa
  • A quick stopover just to see some greenery and a WWII memorial
