Enchanted River, Hinatuan

4.3
#1 of 17 in Things to do in Surigao del Sur Province
Veiled by the Philippine jungle, Enchanted River springs seemingly out of nowhere and runs a short distance before it flows into the Philippine Sea. A dirt road and uneven pathways with natural steep steps lead you to the river, where you can swim in salt water only 15 m (50 ft) deep, and watch the fish feeding at noon. You can even rent a small boat and sail out to the ocean. The mysterious river has inspired legends of fairies, ancestral spirits, and uncatchable fish that dwell in its jade and sapphire waters. Ongoing explorations of the underground system of caves, which started in 1999, have not yet determined the origin of the river. • Enchanted River in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur is popular to tourists. When I saw the waters of the river, I would not wonder why so many people have been talking about this place. Without a doubt, the Enchanted River experience is truly majestic! Over the years, for the river to be protected and preserved, several rules have been implemented like no swimming without life jacket. At the main part of the river, it's about 100-meter deep while the rest got around 15-meter deep. You wouldn't be able to touch the surface of the river and wearing life jacket is a requirement. This means that you can't dive at the bottom of the river, unlike before. You are also not allowed to swim in the part with 100-meter deep. That's somehow unfortunate but I guess this is a way of preserving the natural beauty of the river. Neverless, I must say that visiting Enchanted River at least once is surely a must for tourists visiting Mindanao, Philippines!
  • Very enchanting! They allow you to smin in the river but not close to the deep side because of strong current. I like the fact that local government is strict in implementing their rules to preserve the serenity of the river. A must-see!
  • We enjoyed our visit here even if we were not able to catch the 12nn feeding time where they say fishes gather to a feeding frenzy. It is very clean, clear and the most beautiful river I’ve ever seen. They don’t allow food in the river area to preserve its cleanliness, you are only allowed to bring water or any drinks. They don’t have a cottage or table near the river so don’t bring a lot of things.
  • I actually expected so much in this place but I was disappointed when I get there. I don't like the water it's brownish but I enjoyed their island hopping though. People in Surigao are very nice, honest and accomodating. You will never go wrong in Surigao.
  • It was great and all but is now really crowded. not enough room to accommodate everybody. but the river was really nice
