Snake Island (Vigan Island), El Nido

4.4
#3 of 16 in Nature in El Nido
An untouched oasis of sand and sea, Snake Island (Vigan Island) connects to mainland Palawan via a winding sweep of sandbar, appearing daily at low tide. Accessed via boat or foot (during low tide), the island itself is small and blanketed with thick foliage. Surrounded by crystal clear azure ocean, snorkel along the shore, then hike to the top of the island’s viewing platform to see the snaking sandbar in full view. Keep your eyes peeled for monkeys hiding in the mangroves. If walking across the sandbar, make sure you wear water shoes to protect your feet from rockfish. Where to stay in El Nido

Long since established as a domestic tourist destination, El Nido's growing international reputation has led to a number of eco-tourism and resort-style options popping up in recent years. The main town on the west coast offers the greatest choice, with sprawling luxury resorts, hotels, and guesthouses all enjoying convenient access to the surrounding islands. Staying on one of the islands presents an exciting alternative, although you'll find the choice largely limited to luxury hotels.
