Cathedral Caves, El Nido

3.6
#7 of 16 in Nature in El Nido
Take a boat ride to explore Cathedral Caves. You can choose to stay on the boat and simply enjoy the view, or, if you're experienced and the tides are right, jump in the water and dive inside the cave. See the inside created naturally from the lava flow, with the entrance so magnificent that it resembles the architecture of a cathedral. Inside you'll find thousands of spiky stalactites hanging from the roof. To find out how to plan a trip to El Nido, use our trip itinerary maker.

  • Big boats can not get through this cave. It looks spectacular but swimming in it is prohibited due to strong current and sightings of sea snakes. Our boat moored at the cave's mouth for a brief while ...  more »
  • Stage of the Tower B. The banka comes before this rocky flaw in the shape of Bell Tower of Cathedral, to take pictures, but we did not penetrate. No doubt in a kayak, but it was not planned.

  • Our boat could only get up to the entrance of the cave so there's not much to see really other than a few meters into the cave.
  • So fantastic
  • The islet that houses this cave is an otherwise unassuming rock in the middle of this vast, clear ocean. Once you sail around the back, though, you're greeted with the gaping maw of nature. The outrigger will not take you inside, however they will not stop you from swimming in to explore on your own. I highly suggest doing so, with life vests if necessary, as this is one of the few places left on earth where you can truly escape.
  • Small area limited by water tides
  • The entrance to the cave is really narrow, so you might come here without being able to enter if the waves are high.

Where to stay in El Nido

Long since established as a domestic tourist destination, El Nido's growing international reputation has led to a number of eco-tourism and resort-style options popping up in recent years. The main town on the west coast offers the greatest choice, with sprawling luxury resorts, hotels, and guesthouses all enjoying convenient access to the surrounding islands. Staying on one of the islands presents an exciting alternative, although you'll find the choice largely limited to luxury hotels.
